After getting off work around midnight, Max was feeling revved up and at a loose end, as she often did during the nocturnal hours. Not ready to go home, she got on her Ninja with the vague plan of taking a long ride around the island

"Phoebe!" Max exclaimed, having caught sight of the young woman's face and recognising her instantly. Max closed the distance, crouching in front of the other woman and reaching out a hand to touch her shoulder, she looked up into Phoebe's face, her eyes searching, her expression clearly concerned, "What's wrong, girl!?"
...What is she doing out here, all alone in the park, at night, crying?
"They've done something to him..." she choked out. "Changed him... made him mean and hurtful." She shook her head. "He's always been like family and tonight... he scared me, hurt me and I don't know what's happened." She took a shuddering breath.
"He never would have hurt me before... never would have threatened me or scared me. Tonight, he did all three and acted like he hated me."

The voice sounded vaguely familiar and she lifted her head face slightly, staring and the female through tear-blurred eyes.
She knew this woman. Had a class with her and had recently met her at Lana's party.
"M-M-Max?"
