It is perhaps the last great Antarctic expedition - to find an explanation for why there is a great mountain range buried under the White Continent. I can't think of Antarctica ever without thinking of this.

(and the way I dealt with the chills I got while reading the appropriate Lovecraft was to mutter to myself "Mountains of Madness? Hah! Cliffs of Insanity!")

This one I have seen. Actually, when I was just skimming the article, it was the first thing (so to speak) that I thought of. It wasn't until I went back to the beginning and noticed that they were specifically exploring the Gamburtsev Mountains that I made the other connection.
