History:
Melanie's page on the DCAU wiki. Personality: Melanie’s morality is definitely something that could be called into question. Having lived most of her life as a member of the Royal Flush Gang, she is used to a life of theft, great escapes, and hurting people. If Melanie has to injure someone in order to ensure an escape or if they’re in her way, she’ll do so without much hesitation at all. However, even though she thinks nothing of injuring someone or knocking them out completely, she does value human life and appears to be against actually killing people. After attempting to rob a museum, Melanie didn’t take issue with her family holding a guard hostage in order to get away from Batman, but she objected with King ordered Jack to drop him. She knew that the fall would kill him (if Batman didn’t rescue him in time), and she was against the idea of letting someone die in order to escape. Melanie is willing to do a lot of things, but getting someone killed definitely isn’t one of them.
Melanie is also fairly outspoken. There are definitely times when she’ll keep quiet, but more often than not she’ll choose to speak her mind. If someone does something that bothers her, Melanie won’t hesitate to call them out on it and let them know that they’re being ridiculous. On one occasion, Melanie spoke out against her father and pointed out that his obsession with Batman would lead to their family getting caught. This is something that upset her father greatly, but Melanie didn’t step down and stood by her opinion because she felt it was the truth and that it needed to be said. Regardless of the consequences, however strong or insignificant, Melanie usually speaks her mind will call someone out out if they do something stupid or need a reality check.
Due to her family’s lifestyle, Melanie never stayed in a single place for a very long time and never really knew what it was like to have a permanent home. Not only that, but constantly moving meant she never got to have any friends. Thanks to this, Melanie has adopted a ‘now or never’ way of thinking when it comes to both her life and her friends.
Whenever she meets someone, she knows that it won’t be long until her family has to leave the city again, so she just focuses on the few moments she gets to have with the person she’s with. She’ll immediately rush into things - especially if she wants a relationship with someone - not wanting to waste any time waiting for things to happen, and instead choosing to make things happen. Constantly moving around has left Melanie feeling lonely, so she does everything she can to make sure she gets the most out of the people she meets. However, since leaving her family behind, Melanie has been trying to change and has started living an honest lifestyle. Now that she actually has a home, a steady job, and isn’t constantly going from city to city, she can try to put both her past and old habits behind her.
Finally, in spite of what she’s done in the past, Melanie is still a decent person. She does her best to take care of the people she loves, especially her family. Melanie goes as far as saving up her money to bail her brother out of jail and getting him a job at her work. Jack and the rest of her family hurt her before, but she wanted her brother to start making an honest living just as she did. He was family, and that was enough reason for Melanie to try and help Jack turn his life around. Melanie has done many bad things in the past, but at the end of the day, she’s still a good person and she’ll do everything she can to try and help the people she loves.
Strengths:
Physical: Melanie is excellent with hand-to-hand combat. She’s been seen using a fair share of both strength and agility in order to take down her opponents. While fighting alongside her family, Melanie has managed to defeat professional bodyguards as if they were nothing - such as grabbing one and effectively flipping him over the side of a yacht. However, Melanie doesn’t need her family’s help in order to do well in battle, as she has taken down Jokerz and guards for some of Gotham’s top crime bosses without much effort at all. Melanie definitely is not the strongest person out there, but she’s still a force to be reckoned with.
Mental: Melanie was taught many necessary skills by her family, but her specialty appears to be taking care of security systems. Whenever they break into any kind of high-security area, Melanie’s family always turns to her to disable them. Aside from that, Melanie has grown to be quite adept at breaking and entering. She appears to know exactly what to do in order to successfully break into somewhere, such as when she broke into Terry’s home without leaving any signs that alluded to her having snuck inside.
Weaknesses:
Mental: One issue with Melanie is that she is easily distracted. She is usually focused and can complete any given task without much trouble, but if she has something else on her mind, she won’t be able to focus properly. If she has something distracting her, Melanie won’t be able to take the time needed to get things done properly - such as when she couldn’t focus on properly disabling the alarm for a museum on the same night she had a date with Terry. All in all, Melanie is quite good at staying focused and getting the job done, but if something else is on her mind then the chances of her doing things properly is slim to none.
Emotional: One of Melanie’s greatest weaknesses is probably her family. Before she left the Royal Flush Gang and was still pursuing a life of crime, Melanie would do anything for her family if it meant their approval. She had neglected to pursue her relationship with Terry because they didn’t think he was worth it. Melanie knew that being with Terry would have made her happy - especially since she was growing tired of working as a part of the Royal Flush Gang - but she sacrificed that chance at happiness in order to please her family. Besides that, even though her parents think of her as more of a subordinate than a daughter, she still loves them all and only wants them to be safe. A sure-fire way to manipulate Melanie would be to threaten her family in some manner, and she’ll do anything and everything she can to ensure their safety. This was clearly shown when Melanie’s family made it seem like they had been kidnapped as a way to test her loyalty, and she risked her life several times trying to steal the ransom money from the Derby. She didn’t stop at anything, and even went so far as to trick Batman in order to get away from him. That way she could get back to her original goal of getting the money and protecting her family.
