Character name: Benjamin Tennyson
Series: Ben 10: Alien Force
Character journal:
ten_2_oneAge: 15
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Terribly confused
Category: Student
Year: Sophomore
Extracurricular activity/Sport activity: Soccer, considering the Culinary Club
Appearance: Ben’s a rather shrimpy-looking kid, standing at around 5’4” with a wiry frame presently lacking in muscle tone but hinting at bigger and better things to come. His tanned skin and sun-lightened brown hair testify to an outdoorsy lifestyle more than his build does. Ben subconsciously dresses in tones that highlight and draw attention to his bright green eyes, arguably his most attractive feature. Because he’s a fairly active guy, Ben prefers looser clothing that’s easy to move in. His last school didn’t have a uniform, so he’s not terribly comfortable with a tie. He’ll go without as long as he can get away with it or wear it loosely if he can’t.
Personality: Ben reeks of underdog in the way that most boys his age reek of Axe. He tries so hard to be the plucky hero, but very rarely succeeds. While not exactly a fighter, Ben has a scrappy, defiant look about him. He gives the impression of a guy that’s tired of taking beatings from those bigger and stronger than him, like a yorkie pretending it’s a great dane. Despite that, he’s a friendly and laid-back kid who enjoys being around others. While outgoing, Ben often has issues keeping in touch with friends he’s made over the years. He has a fairly childish sense of humor that masks a young man who is uncertain how long-term friendships work. In terms of academics...He tries. Not the brightest or most dedicated student, but he definitely tries.
History: While Ben was raised in the tiny, out of the way town of Bellwood by his flower child parents, he firmly maintains that any real growth happened under the whimsical care of his wandering traveler of a grandfather. Since the tender age of ten, Ben has spent his summers traveling across the country in a rattling tin can of an RV and having adventures with his grandpa Max and cousin Gwen.
It was during his very first summer traveling that Ben took a trip to New York and met a wild little runaway named Kevin. Ben was in complete awe at the other boy’s free and lawless lifestyle and was proud to call him a friend, if only for a short time. But Ben’s morals and, though he won’t admit it, fear kept him from running away from home and staying with Kevin. He refused to steal or harm others for his own livelihood, and sadly chose to leave Kevin behind. The quickly forged trust and friendship utterly shattered, Ben grew a little wary of others he met during his vacations. He was still friendly, but nowhere near as trusting as he had once been. After the events in New York, Ben never made an attempt to contact Kevin, but still sometimes wonders whatever became of him.
Over the next five years, Ben continued to learn earthy wisdom and independence from his grandfather. Adventurous and exciting summers spent with Max were the highlights of Ben’s life when compared to the months spent getting wedgies from elementary school bullies. Max encouraged Ben to develop his personal image and be the person he wanted to become rather than what other people thought he should become. As a result, Ben matured slowly, refusing to give up childish games and pretend adventures, though he did eventually wise up a bit more through meeting people and learning about other lifestyles. His cousin, with many years of private school under her belt, inadvertently inspired Ben to try his luck with the academy crowd, if only for the opportunity to one-up her.
Though his relationship with his parents is good, Ben’s favorite caretaker has always been his grandfather. Max is the first one he’ll call for advice, but the last one he’ll call for cooking tips. Between his parents’ meat-is-murder attitude and his grandfather’s preference towards questionable sources of protein, Ben has chosen a vegetarian diet with vitamin supplements to make up for what he doesn’t eat.
Example tag: The writing on the bathroom wall was a fine thing to ponder while poised at the urinal. ’Seiji Seikatsu is innocent until proven guilty’ was written just about everywhere, but Ben still couldn’t figure out the meaning behind it. Mission accomplished, he washed his hands and picked his way through the locker room to get ready for soccer practice.
Out on the pitch, Ben tugged at his gloves and placed himself in front of the goal. This was where he could really shine. Daydreams of popularity and undying glory began to parade through the brunet’s head, and he completely missed the first soccer ball whizzing past him. ‘Oops’ Ben snapped himself back to reality to the jeers of students watching the practice, settling into a more ready stance. ‘The next one is mine!’
