It's got to be posturing to energize their base, because I don't see this
as an effective strategy for capturing the middle. And I speak as someone
in the middle.

I concur!! We're in the middle of the worst recession ever and they want to throw away tax payer money on a dog and pony show. The GOP seems to blow a lot of money to benefit businesses, the wealthy 1% and lining their own pockets. What annoys me is how they still have such a strong following despite the fact that the Bush administration essentially killed the middle class.
