I don't remeber seeing 1st season DVDs when I went to this shop >o< Maybe she can try to look at K-books ? ^^"
Yeah it's normally the case, but many photosets can be found at K-books, and it's really cheap so you can buy many pictures of your favorite boys *o*

They also have Animates in Shinjuku and Shibuya (if your friend is already going to be heading to one of those places, it might be easier for your friend to go to one of those).

Kbooks is a resale store selling used and used goods. But even used goods in Japan are of very good quality so don't worry about that.
Kbooks is divided into separate stores depending on what they sell and the one you want is Kbooks Cast. It is like a Tenimyu shrine in there with DVDs, CDs, goods, pamphlets and photosets all from first and second season. You can also find photos, goods and various other plays that your favourite boys might be in. It's a dangerous store since it has so many great things in it ( ... )

And while a previous person said that first season DVDs can't be bought at Animate that is untrue. They do still sell them but stock will vary from store to store. Some are bigger and have more space for all the DVDs while others will just stock the most recent ones.
