Prince of Tennis ZaizenPersonality:
Zaizen is basically a brat. He tends to bluntly say whatever is on his mind. He has no problem pointing out flaws in others, including his own teammates. He routinely calls two of his senpai idiots. He can be down right mean at times, referring to a rival team member as extra baggage and saying a match would have gone better if his teammate hadn’t played. He has the attitude of an only child, which comes from the fact that his older brother is old enough to be married with a son, while Zaizen is only 13. He is used to being the best at everything he does without trying so he is also quite arrogant.
Because he’s usually the best without trying, he lacks motivation. He has never had to really work for anything so he figures why bother now. He won’t put forth extra effort as long as minimal effort will still put him near the top. He doesn’t always listen to whoever is in charge because he usually figures that he knows more.
He’s also pretty apathetic to just about everything, including, to a certain extant, tennis. That’s pretty much unheard of in a show where everyone is obsessed with tennis. He’s only reaction to being told that he wouldn’t play the National Semifinals right before the match was that it couldn’t be helped. He also turned down tennis camp because, according to him, it sounded annoying. One thing he does seem passionate about is music. He’s fairly picky about it, preferring UK indie music. He’ll probably take a long time to get used to the fact that that music doesn’t really exist in Johto.
He doesn’t really fit in with the rest of his team. If he had his way, he would go to another school. He has referred to his senpais as good for nothing people on a blog he keeps. The blog is about how weird tennis players are. A lot of it is probably based on his own observations of his teammates, but there is also some stuff about rival players. He can apparently be persuasive when he wants to be because he managed to convince other players to tell him their teammates most embarrassing secrets. He had intended for the blog to be a secret from the tennis world, so he wasn’t really trying to cause problems within teams.
There is something beneath the bratty attitude. He plays doubles which requires him to trust and cooperate at least on court. While their doubles relationship is mostly due more to Kenya’s effort than Zaizen’s, he is actually friends with Kenya. His favorite movie is Amélie, which doesn’t really fit with his personality, seeing as it’s whimsical and about helping others find happiness. So he has a softer side, he just doesn’t show it very often.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ He’s in great shape considering he plays lots of tennis.
+ He is laid-back if not annoyed, and doesn’t seemed to be shocked by a lot.
+ He’s smart and if he decides it’s worth the effort, he can strategize well.
+ He’s good with technology.
- He’s blunt and completely unapologetic about it.
- He has no motivation and tends to do whatever he feels like as opposed to what he should do.
- He likes to provoke people who he knows will respond because he finds their reactions amusing.

First Person Sample:
[His face shows no emotion, but his voice sounds slightly tense.] I’m in the world of Pokémon, correct? [The gear jerks suddenly and Zaizen rolls his eyes.] I guess there’s nothing I can do about that. Might as well make the best of it. [The gear jerks again and Zaizen frowns.] Can anyone tell me just what exactly this thing wants? [A bagon is trying to force Zaizen to leave town so they can start training. Zaizen isn’t amused.]
Third Person Sample:
Zaizen didn’t like Johto. Mostly because he was sure that Amelie hated him. It wasn’t his fault that she had been his starter. It wasn’t his fault she was determined to train nonstop. It wasn’t his fault that he found training boring.
Okay, maybe that was his fault, because he had decided that before he even started training. It wasn’t really that bad, but Amelie wanted to do nothing but train. Not for the first time, Zaizen wondered if he and Amelie could manage to work together. She was difficult. At least, to him she was.
He didn’t really want to trade her either. She was a powerful ally and she sometimes reminded him of someone from home. He wasn’t sure who but occasionally she would do something and his homesickness would subsided. He was actually surprised at just how homesick he was considering three of his teammates were in Johto with him. But whenever Amelie helped he wanted to help her reach her goal.
His personality just didn’t agree. Very seldom was he annoyed by his own personality. This happened to be one of those times. He knew that he could train her, she could level up and become a salamence, and be happy. If he got a badge from one of the gyms, he didn’t know which, he could even fly with her. It was a great theoretical plan. It also sounded like a lot of work.
Taking on a gym would mean he’d need more Pokémon, which meant more personalities to possible clash with…maybe he should try to be more optimistic. If he was stuck here, and as far as he could tell, he was, then at some point he would need more Pokémon, so he might as well start now.
“Hey, Amelie,” she glared at him. Yep, she hates him. “Let’s go catch some wild Pokémon.” He had to start somewhere. A peace offering and at least he was trying. Amelie looked confused. This was completely backwards. “Look, we both want to fly and so I thought we could start now…unless you don’t want to practice.” Amelie was at the door in an instant. “That’s what I thought.”
