Ahh, a beautiful new morning on the first day of school at Tenshi High. Flowers were blooming, the air was crisp and cool, a thin sheet of dew covered the grass, and the chorus of chirping from the sea of birds that filled the sky was heard in the air. There were students in every which way, laughing, joking, squeeling and rushing to get copies of their schedules since they'd lost their first one.
I took a deep breath, the alluring aroma of wet grass and different scents coming from the students filling my nasal, then exhaled with just as much enthusiasm. So far, so good. Not bad for the lowly freshman. Now, all I have to do is carry myself with the utmost finesse and try not to embarass myself too mu--
"Hey, watch out!" I heard someone yell from behind. Who are they talking to? I turned to find out, only to see the guy who'd yelled was looking at me. What the hell is he--
"KYAH!" I screeched and fell backwards as a black and white blur barely scraped the side of my face. I landed on my rear with a thud, and dust from the PE field billowed up around me. I coughed to clear the dusty air out of my face. It took me a few seconds to comprehend what had just happened. It was a soccer ball, and it was coming my way... I narrowly missed it and tripped backwards in the process... and now I sat, looking around, dumbfounded and confused. And the people around me were laughing. I couldn't tell if it was with me, or at me. But lemme tell you, I sure as hell wasn't laughing.
"Haha, sorry!" the guy from before laughed, waving his hand at me as he ran after the ball. I glared at him in response as he passed by, then carefully eased myself up so as not to flip my skirt and further embarass myself. I dusted off my clothes and sighed. So much for the utmost finesse bit... I thought helplessly as I gathered my bookbag and walked off.
Unfortunately, that was only one out of many accidents in store for one, Hotaru Shindou. I was deathly late for my first period class since my schedule got mixed up with someone else's, thus getting scolded by my already-annoyed art teacher, Ms. Jeka. Then got detention from her when I accidentally spilled the yellow paint from a shelf on the wall (my seniors told me and a few other freshman that Ms. Jeka likes it when you rearranged her paints for her on the first day, which was, obviously, a lie) making me deathly late for my second class.
Even at lunch I got no peace.
"Hey, freshman, care to join us?" one of my seniors asked me, smiling in my direction. It was the same a$$hole with the soccer ball. He was surrounded by people who were laughing. "It'll be my apology for before."
I raised a questioning eyebrow, then smiled. "Oh, no thank you, you've already apologized. Besides, I fear that if I jostle with your species, my IQ will be lowered a whole ten fold." I smirked at the intake of breath from the group.
"What did you say?" he demanded, standing up and slamming his eating utensils down onto the table.
I supressed a laugh. I was squealing in my mind. Ah, finally, things were going my way! "Ahh, don't feel so bad. Brains aren't everything. In fact, in your case they're nothing," I shrugged.
He (hah, I never did find out his name) pushed his way out from where he was sitting to tower over and glare down at me. "Wanna repeat that?"
"Oh, I'm sorry, was I going too fast for you? I guess you prove that even God makes mistakes sometimes. Oh, but do tell me, are you always this stupid, or are you making some sort of a special effort today?" I smiled at him, and I could tell that he wanted to hit me, but was refraining himself from doing so, as there were teachers present. Oh my god, is he thinking of a comeback?
"Who the hell are you calling stupid?" he demanded in what he thought was a dangerous voice.
"Who am I calling stupid? I don't know. What's your name?" He snarled. Was that the best he could do? Oh- it looks like he's thinking again.
"...if I wanted your opinion, I would've rattled your cage."
"GASP! Oh, that was good! That means a thought crossed your mind? Must have been a long and lonely journey. So, go ahead, tell these people everything you know. It'll only take 10 seconds." I crossed my arms and waited patiently for him to respond. And when he didn't, I decided to take another shot. "You know, I've heard what the soccer team says about you, they say you're a real asset. I say they were off by two letters. And your friends would follow you around anywhere, huh? I bet it's out of morbid curiosity." He still didn't say anything. Uh-oh, I'm worried... "What's wrong? Were you holding an umbrella when God was throwing intelligence onto the earth?" Still, no response.
"Never enter a battle of wits when you are, huh, clearly unarmed," I sighed, shaking my head. "And don't thank me for insulting you. It was my pleasure," I said finally, ending the dispute and walking off victoriously. I smiled at the people who gave me dirty looks (my seniors) and grinned at the people who gave me the satisfaction of a smile (my fellow freshmen) But I had to dodge Mr. Emo Asian's praise ("Daaaaaaamn, you told him OFF!")
I was only 5 minutes late to my next class, and the teacher, Ms. Jayn, was very kind about it. She gave me a cheerful smile and asked me to take a seat somewhere. So I turned to scan the classroom; half the class were freshmen, and the other half were sophomores, juniors, and seniors, who were all jeering at the newcomer: me. Ignoring them (and supressing my smile when Ms. Jayn threatened to keep them after class), I walked towards a free seat, and occupied it. Then threw my head down on the desk, recieving a few chuckles from my classmates around me.
"Hey," I heard a voice whisper from behind me. I reluctantly sat up to regard the voice and found myself face to face with a genki girl, who smiled cheerfully at me. "Don't worry about the seniors, they're all jerks like that. Be lucky you're not one of the freshmen they've canned so far today." Great, instill more fear into me from whom the people I already decided to avoid. Why did she have to go and say that? Reading my mind, she smiled wider. "I'm Vivi, and don't worry, they won't touch you."
"Yeah, they never can any girls, so you really are lucky," a guy next to Vivi said, leaning forward so as not to be heard by the teacher. "I'm Gene," he grinned, then gestured to all the people on the half of the classroom that I was sitting in, "and you've picked a fine seat to sit in. These are all your fellow freshman classmates. By the way, nice show at lunch."
I looked around to see that all of them were smiling and waving in assurance at me, and I smiled cheerfully. "I'm Hotaru," I said, turning back to Vivi and Gene. "And thanks, I've had a lot of practice."
The rest of the class was spent doing basically whatever we wanted, since it was only the first day, and Ms. Jayn already gave us our assignment to do at home. Ahhh, school was gonna be fun.
