Merlin forced a smile and bit back tears as Morgana sipped from the water canteen. She smiled gratefully, setting it down and returning to work on the thin fabric. It wasn't until a few moments later that she felt her throat tighten slightly. She lifted her hand to her throat and looked up at Merlin, confusion written all over her beautiful face. His back was turned, but she could almost hear the tears sliding down his cheeks. He batted them away and turned around.

Her eyes grew wide as he gave her a small nod, a stray tear falling down his cheek. That was when it dawned on her. This was his doing. Her throat tightened more and she gasped for breath as Merlin sunk to his knees. He reached out to her, but she hit his chest with her free hand, her face displaying shock and confusion, but above all, betrayal. He tried again, this time receiving no feeble beating. He wrapped his arms around her and finally, she gave in.

She gasped more violently as he brought her closer, one hand clenching fistfuls of his jacket, the other still clutching her rapidly tightening throat. He looked up to the heavens, tears now free-falling down his face, and pleaded with the gods to forgive him. He was never one for religion, but there was a first time for everything. He let out a shaky breath, and she took her last.

The door blew open, and Morgause strode in. But she was already long gone.

"I failed, father," said Arthur Pendragon, the once and future king. "I should have protected Morgana." Uther Pendragon looked into the mirror, clutching the necklace of his ward in his hands. It had been her favorite, though she hadn't worn it often. Whenever he asked her why not, she would always complain that it didn't match any of her outfits. Although she hadn't had a chance to complain in a long time. She had other things to complain about, and truth be told, he had stopped asking ages ago.

"That was my responsibility," he said. They had had their ups and downs, he and his ward. But he had said it before and felt it even stronger now; if she had died, and a huge part of him would have died with her.

That is, if she had died.

Somewhere far away, in the shadow of majestic mountains and a glistening lake, Morgana awoke from a dreamless sleep. She was surrounded by smoke and the smell of burning incense. Morgause stood above her, a small smile growing on her lips. She embraced her, and then stood back up to survey her once more.

"Welcome back, Morgana," she said. And welcome she would be, indeed.

end.
