Reagan asked it in '80; Obama has been paraphrasing it lately. By whatever standard you choose to measure your own economic situation, how do you compare to your own relatively recent history?

Bear in mind that I don't know that I'm any worse off, either.

Four years ago I was in the midst of an expensive adoption, but I tried to exclude that from my figuring.

We're doing better for reasons pretty much unrelated to the government/financial mess.

i'm making a lot more than i was four years ago, but i now support a family of four and owe/pay on two mortgages and two vehicles.

the four months ago question (for me) hinges on the property market. i'm not sure whether it's moved up or down in that time.

Almost certainly down.

in the last four months? it almost doesn't matter. any move in that time frame has been negligible.

The four years question is hard, because so much has changed since then in so many ways (in our lives, not the world in general), but I'm pretty sure the bottom line is up.

In the shorter term, though, last month we had a large client cancel FOUR consultants in one fell swoop due to project cuts, though, which sucks big fat donkey balls. And that was on the heels of a moderately expensive failed business experiment (that can partially, but not totally, be blamed on the economy).

A) Yes, but very early in that 4 year window I married a woman whose annual earnings are (at least) twice what I earned in any year I've been working. If my life situation had not changed in that way, I would almost certainly be less well off today than I was four years ago.

B) ...
