Playlist: To Work In A Bakery

Oct 13, 2008 18:35

What up, what up, I made a playlist. This is mostly just to justify my usage of songs I really like in Sometimes I Long To Be Landlocked, I admit it. Whatever! You get free shit, I don’t see how you lose in this deal. My only warning is that, apparently, my idea of domesticity sounds incredibly like Matt Berninger. That said, I present to you To Work In A Bakery, a cute little mini playlist of some of the songs that are referenced or quoted in The DomestEPIC.

Title: Sometimes I Long To Be Landlocked

1. My Mother Was A Chinese Trapeze Artist - The Decemberists
I know every yardarm
from main mast to jib sheet
but sometimes I long to be landlocked
and to work in a bakery

They spend the first night on Jon’s couch, drinking beers and eating pizza. When Jon pulls out a bag of weed and his CD collection, rolling a joint as he says, “you have to hear this one song, I’ve been playing it, like, nonstop for the last month, you have no idea” Spencer can almost shut his eyes and pretend they’re on the tour bus, on some dark interstate heading to another show. He feels calm for the first time in weeks. His fingers are clenched loosely around the neck of his beer; his laugh is relaxed and full when Jon jumps up on the couch and starts singing along.
“All the wine is all fooorr meee,” Jon croons, getting right up in Spencer’s face with it, smelling like beer and sweat and pot, a tour smell. It feels like something, something Spencer has been missing since the break-up.

2. All The Wine - The National
I carry the dollhouse safe on my shoulders
through the black city, night lights are on in the corners
and everyone’s sleeping upstairs
all safe and sound, all safe and sound

When the song ends Jon collapses back onto the couch, head in Spencer’s lap, smiling his dopey smile up at him. Spencer bumps Jon’s forehead lightly with the bottom of his beer, leaving a slight ring of condensation. “Do you ever miss it?” he asks as the next track* comes on, something slower and heavier.
*Okay, I lied, the next track is Abel, but this one fit the mood better. SO SUE ME.

3. The Geese of Beverly Road - The National
we’re drunk and sparking, our legs are open
our hands are covered in cake but I swear we didn’t have any
I swear we didn’t have any
hey love, we’ll get away with it
we’ll run like we’re awesome, totally genius

“Yeah, and I just got asked if ‘Die Monster Die’ was our new single,” Jesse says, rolling his eyes. She punches him in the arm and he smiles at her a bit.
“I can’t help it if your groupies don’t know the Misfits, James,” Luce says. “Next time we’ll just preface the song with a whole history of horror punk, shall we?”

4. Die Monster Die - The Misfits
I enter this door, look into the mirrors, I don’t recognize this face
it's looking back at me, die, die monster die
die monster die, die monster die
there’s a place where the mirrors don’t lie
there’s a place where the mirrors don’t lie

“Has he ever told you about the rock opera he never finished? Pete kept trying to tell everyone we were basically good kids, but no one who hadn’t been doing a serious amount of drugs on a regular basis would have written that opera. Pete hid the demo somewhere and Ryan’s still looking.”
“Really?” Luce says thoughtfully. “Because we’re heading to Pete’s tomorrow and I bet you twenty bucks I could find it.”
“I’ll give you two hundred to find it and destroy it*,” Spencer laughs.
*Spencer may hate it, but I think it’s HILARIOUS. Which is why all the lyrics from the demo are below. Ramshackled hands! LOL.

5. Nearly Witches - The Paul Revere Jumpsuit Apparatus
here I am composing a burlesque
out of where they rest their heads
sulking in their splintered cradles
and ramshackled hands
they asked for it
as a boy I eat my wishes on golden toothpicks
and digested them with wolf intestines
I fell from the heavens
as a fetish blessed with an operatic skeleton
and as the stars watched me descend
I cracked a family tree and
chopped off all the branches

Spencer glances back at the band. Luce is now over by Jesse, the two of them plucking out chords on acoustic guitars. Gradually, Spencer realizes it’s a song he knows.
“He’s a part time lover and a full time friend,” Luce sings, grinning wickedly at him. “He don’t see what anyone can see in anyone else but you…”
“She’s kind of a bitch,” Spencer says to Ryan.
He likes her.

6. Anyone Else But You - The Moldy Peaches
you are always tryin’ to keep it real
I’m in love with how you feel
I don’t see what anyone can see in anyone else… but you
we both have shiny happy fits of rage
you want more fans, I want more stage
I don’t see what anyone can see in anyone else… but you

He flips through the book for a bit with the iPod on shuffle, trying to get into Jon’s head, which is hard, because Jon’s head is obviously a really very-secretly-crazy place to be.
Jon’s library is pretty much a hot mess. Nothing is labeled according to any sort of plan that makes sense and most of the songs are just listed as “track 06” or “that song about cats that tom likes.”

7. Virtute The Cat Explains Her Departure - The Weakerthans
after scrapping with the ferals and the tabby
let you brush my matted fur
how I’d knead into your chest while you were sleeping
shallow breathing made me purr
but I can’t remember the sound that you found for me

It’s kind of crazy, he thinks, the zen of baking. Half an hour ago he felt completely scattered, but something about the process of mixing the ingredients, rolling out the dough, the smell of the cookies warming and rising, it all just makes him feel so calm. He’s not worried about anything at all. He’s so relaxed he even starts singing along to the song playing on Jon’s iPod. He doesn’t know it, but it’s simple and it’s pretty enough to be infectious. He feels so good, in fact, that he decides to make another batch.

8. You Are My Joy - The Reindeer Section
if I could cradle you into my arms
I would cradle you tight in my arms, always
so don’t be scared of all the hurtful words
‘cause in the end they hurt themselves much worse
you are my joy, you are my joy, you are my joy

“Doesn’t hurt to dream,” Jon mumbles. Spencer can feel him smiling against Spencer’s bare skin. He hums along to the CD they left playing downstairs, solidifying the faded bars of music that are drifting, ghost-like, up the stairs.
“We don’t have to plan anything now, we have plenty of time,” Spencer says, more to himself than to Jon. He smiles into the dark and hums along.

9. 29 Years - The National
could you tell her I made the headlines
says ‘boy draws wings on everything’
could you tell her to check the headlines
says ‘boy finds angels in the river’
you know I dreamed about you
for twenty-nine years before I saw you
you know I dreamed about you
I missed you for twenty-nine years
