Summary: Why didn't Lucifer kill Castiel when he had the chance? Why didn't he kill Dean for that matter? This is how Castiel and Lucifer's scene from 5x10 could've gone.
Castiel is uncomfortable. The sound of flickering flames fill the oherwise silent room. The warmth radiating from the ring of fire is constricting, the heat threatening to choke him. But the physical discomfort is nothing compared to the presence of Lucifer standing there, examining him, reading him.
Castiel doesn't want to show any weakness, but he unconsciously shifts his weight under Lucifer’s gaze. Lucifer is more powerful than he. He is cunning and deceitful and Castitel knows he's planning his words carefully, deciding what best will tempt him.
But despite being trapped, Castiel isn't scared. He knows he has reason to be afraid. He’s at the mercy of Lucifer, the first of the Fallen. He knows he's no match and he truly believes tonight is the last night of his existence.
But he isn't afraid. He knows he will not betray the Winchesters, and that is all that matters. Lucifer may try and tempt him with words, but Castiel will never fall for them.
“You would really die for them?”
Castiel is slightly taken aback when Lucifer breaks the silence, but he does his best to show no surprise. Not that he can hide anything from his brother. “Yes,” he answers truthfully.
Lucifer looks at Castiel curiously and Castiel wishes he could know what Lucifer is thinking, especially since he knows Lucifer is reading his every thought.
“You betrayed heaven. Betrayed God,” Lucifer continues as he slowly paces in front of Castiel. "Honestly, I never would've suspected you being capable of such an act."
Castiel may have betrayed heaven, but his reason was righteous. God would never look down upon him for trying to prevent the destruction of His creations. “I betrayed to stop you from rising,” Castiel responds, unable to hide the anger in his voice.
Hearing Castiel's tone, Lucifer stops his pacing and looks directly at Castiel. Then he chuckles.
Castiel wasn't expecting Lucifer's reaction to be laughter. He doesn't know where the humor lies within his words.
"You're so amusing, Castiel," Lucifer responds to Castiel's thoughts. "You should know you can't lie to yourself. Or me."
"I'm not lying," Castiel says, automatically taking a defensive stance. Despite the the dire circumstances of his situation, he's not going to let Lucifer get to him.
Lucifer continues to look at Castiel with disbelief. “Would you let me have Sam Winchester if I promised no harm would come to Michael's vessel?"
Castiel stiffens ever so slightly. It lets Lucifer know what he's already known, Castiel's weakness.
“No,” Castiel answers truthfully, his voice coming out rougher than normal, constricted by the tightness in his throat. They both know it's no lie. Everyone in heaven and hell knows of Dean and Sam Winchester’s love for one another. Everyone knows if you break one brother, you break the other. Castiel is no exception, he knows this as well. He knows he cannot allow Sam to be taken, not if he wants to protect Dean.
“You know his role. I should kill him immediately," Lucifer says, no hesitation in his voice. There's no trickery or deceit involved, it's the truth. And for the first time in Lucifer's possession, Castiel is afraid. Not for himself, but for Dean. He cannot hide his fear, it is coming off him in sudden waves of desperation. His inner panic clearly visible under Lucifer's watchful eyes.
And Lucifer is disgusted. Castiel can feel it, Lucifer wants him to feel what he's feeling, to know what he's thinking. An angel should never show compassion towards any human, especially not to the degree Castiel's feeling. It's degrading to their kind and just another reason why they should all be killed.
As much as Castiel tries, he can't push away Lucifer's feelings of hatred.
“Don't you see I want to help you? We're both Fallen, Castiel..."
"I am not Fallen!" Castiel interrupts Lucifer's words, stopping himself before he leaps through the flames to attack. He is nothing like Lucifer. Nothing.
"Why do you believe yourself to be superior?” Lucifer asks calmly, Castiel's outburst not phasing him in the slightest. "We're one in the same, brother."
"I am nothing like you," Castiel grounds out.
“You’re right. You are worse than me.”
A look of confusion graces Castiel’s features for a second before he steels his expression.
“I fell for loving God too much. You fell for loving a man.”
Castiel is ready to argue, to deny Lucifer’s words. Except he can feel Lucifer peering into his soul. He knows whatever he feels for Dean sits there plainly for Lucifer to read.
“You love him, Castiel. You can't deny it.”
He’s afraid now for himself. Afraid that Lucifer is peering into his soul, seeing...
"You've let him touch you." Lucifer says, barely containing the surprise in his voice. "You've let him soil your vessel."
Lucifer doesn't look angry. He looks disappointed, and Castiel wishes he could fly away and escape Lucifer's patronizing looks, leave before his brother can't see anymore of what he's done. Only Lucifer could make Castiel feel ashamed of his actions.
"I have him pinned down right now. I could kill him if I wanted." Lucifer snaps his fingers, "Just like that."
Castiel can't control his thoughts or emotions. He's afraid for Dean, afraid for himself. Afraid that Lucifer really will go and kill Dean right now. He knew the chances of them surviving tonight were slim, but he hadn't allowed himself to dwell on the implications, the possibilities.
What if he does die? What if he could've saved Dean? What if Dean dies, and Castiel doesn't? What else would he have to fight for?
"Don't worry," Lucifer says, snapping Castiel out of his thoughts. "I won’t do that. Not yet. We’re still brothers, Castiel. I know how much you care for him, how much his death would hurt you now."
“I don't understand,” Castiel says, because he doesn't. He doesn't know why Lucifer would spare Dean, there's no strategic advantage. It must be a trick, a trap of some kind.
“I’m not going to kill him, yet. He has yet to betray you. But once he does, once he hurts you, I will have no problem killing him.”
"Dean will not betray me," Castiel responds, momentarily forgetting the fact that Lucifer's words could all be part of some deceitful plan.
"He is human, Castiel. They are all selfish and greedy. Don't think your Dean Winchester is special."
Castiel wants to argue, to tell Lucifer just how special Dean is, has been, and will always be. But he doesn't. He has nothing to say or to prove. Dean will show Lucifer just how special he is, that Castiel doesn't doubt.
Of course, Castiel never needed to say anything, Lucifer knows exactly what he is thinking.
"You are so very loyal, my brother. But such loyalty and devotion is misplaced."
"Why are you doing this?" Castiel knows he should remain silent, but he still can't wrap his mind around why Lucifer would spare Dean.
"You're my baby brother after all, even if you're foolish. I don't want to hurt you, if I can avoid it."
"Dean..."
That's when Lucifer finally loses his calm. "Answer me this Castiel. If he had to choose between saving you or his brother, who would he pick?"
"That is not a fair question."
"If he had to pick between you, who defied heaven to stand by his side, and his brother, who's soul is so tainted-"
"Do not speak of Sam Winchester that way," Castiel interrupts. He's not going to allow himself to listen to Lucifer's words.
"You know he's going to say yes to me. You know what will happen once he does."
Castiel doesn't think about that possible future. He refuses to. If Sam were ever to say yes... Castiel knows all hope would be lost. Dean would be lost. Which is exactly why Castiel isn't going to let it happen. He will defend them both, it doesn't matter if he loses his life. "You will not take Sam Winchester."
"We'll see," Lucifer says, walking away without another word, leaving Castiel alone with his thoughts.
"You will not take Sam Winchester," Castiel repeats long after Lucifer has left, the flames from the fire the only thing listening.
