Riptides aren't that scary, really! You've got to go down to the beach, even if you just go up to your knees or something! (I <3 San Diego beaches...the water is nice and warm...well, warmer than the beaches near me.) And if you do go out far (going out beyond the waves, and letting them roll under you and lift you up is the most AMAZING feeling in the world) and you get caught in a riptide, swim parallel to the shore until you're out of it, then swim back. But you really shouldn't go to the beach by yourself, it's not safe.
That's very very good to know about riptides, thanks! I know I'm being a wimp about it, but I'm used to undertow being something you tell little kids about before they know how to swim. (And it's usually nearer the shore, when the waves are going back out? But you said it's out further...?) For it to be dangerous to adult swimmers is just weird.
The price of the zoo's not so bad, I'm thinking, if you're (a) not taking a gang of people and (b) not planning on doing anything else very expensive. I'm very easily amused, so the ticket is likely to be my idea of splurging.
And thank you! I'm really looking forward to it. :D
