Tara needed to get away from the slumber party for just a couple of minutes. Everyone was getting kind of raucous, and she felt a headache coming on. She decided to try the kitchen. Maybe she could catch her breath there for a moment.
No one was there, and she leaned against the fridge, feeling the blessed cool soothe away the incipient pain. There was a sense of motion behind her, and she turned, ready to apologize.
It was Spike. The blonde vampire was looking at her curiously. "You okay, pet? You look a bit peaked."
"Oh sure. I just needed a moment away."
He nodded. "Yeah. They're getting loud. Ex-vengeance demon there is cleaning up the Monopoly game. Not really my thing." He reached for his pocket, obviously about to light up, but then he stopped. "Guess the Slayer wouldn't like me smoking inside."
Tara shook her head. "Probably not." She remembered the earlier scene in the hallway. The bruising around Spike's eye was still very dark. Spike noticed the direction of her gaze, but said nothing. Casting about for something to break the awkward silence, she had a wicked thought. "Muscle cramp, eh?" She deliberately allowed a twinkle in her gaze.
For a moment, Spike seemed uncertain, but then he smiled. Tara thought it was a very nice smile, very different from his usual smirk. "Yeah. About that..."
She grinned back. "Yeah, that was what I thought."
The silence grew more comfortable. Spike cleared his throat. She looked at him expectantly. "You ever kissed a bloke?"
She shook her head.
"Ever wondered?"
She considered for a moment. "I guess. Sometimes." Was this going where she thought it was going? Did she want it to go there? She stalled. "Aren't you, like, with..." She trailed off, not sure how to put it.
He shrugged. "I'm not sure what we are."
Tara thought for a moment. Suddenly, she decided. "Why not?"
Spike smiled, a warmer smile even than before. Tara felt heat wash over her. What was she doing? She glanced over her shoulder, toward the living room.
Spike stepped forward. "Don't worry. Got vampire hearing. Anyone comes, I'll know it."
"Okay." She stood there, not sure what to do next.
Spike took the decision from her by leaning over and gently pressing his lips to hers. He pulled back almost immediately.
"What?" She looked behind her, expecting to see someone coming.
He shook his head. "No. That okay?"
She thought a moment. "Yeah, it was." She moved closer, daring to put her arms around his waist. "But that was hardly enough to really judge."
He grinned. "Right then." Spike kissed her, longer this time. His lips and tongue were cool and larger than she was used to. They felt...nice. She pulled him closer, running her hands up and down his hard planes, so very different than the soft curves she usually caressed.
After a moment, they mutually broke the kiss. Spike was still smiling, his eyes warm, yet serious. "Well?"
She considered. "Not bad."
His eyebrow raised. "Only not bad?" His eyes sparkled, and his voice was light.
She chuckled. "Not bad.' She winked. "But not enough to make me want to drive stick."
She'd surprised him into a laugh. "Fair enough, pet." He considered a moment. "Never kissed one of your kind before either."
"And?"
He grinned. "Not bad."
They both laughed and went back to the party.
