I don't have pictures ready for this entry, but here's the another part to our trip......
We started our day with breakfast in the hotel restaurant. Paul and I chose the "American" breakfast...scrambled eggs, bacon, toast, fruit and juice (it also came with either coffee or tea, but we don't like coffee and weren't in the mood for tea). When our food was served I was very disappointed....my scrambled eggs were runny and the bacon wasn't crisp. I ended up putting ketchup on my eggs (I hate runny eggs). We ordered Pineapple juice to drink and our fruit was a slice of pineappele.......it was fresh and very good. Breakfast, in my opinion, wasn't worth the $13 each.
We opted to rent a car instead of taking the hotel's tour of Rota, this way we could explore at our own pace. Our first stop......the Rota Zoo. It was pretty small and not really much of a zoo. We did get to see a coral crab (it was pretty big), some quail, peacocks, an emu and fruit bats. That was the extent of the zoo. We paid $10 for the both of us. We thanked the guy who showed us around and left. We drove by a Japanese canon, but didn't stop.....there wasn't really a place to park. And as we continued along the road, it eventually turned into a one lane dirt road. That was interesting and a little worrisome since we didn't know what we'd do if we ran into a vehicle coming the other way. Our next stop was Pona Point (a fishing cliff). There was a beautiful view. We spent a good 45 minutes or so walking around and taking pictures here. Then it was back to the dirt road. As we drove we came across a lizard. Paul thought it might be a baby Monitor Lizard (but he's pretty sure now that it wasn't). Unfortunately, we weren't ready with our cameras so it got away. A few minutes later we saw another about the same size, we had the camera ready, but it moved so quickly that we couldn't get a picture. The road got to be really bad...mountain on the left (maybe 2ft from the car) and a cliff on the right (maybe 3ft from the car). Thre wasn't a whole lot to see on this road. We stopped where a waterfall was supposed to be, but there wasn't one. Then, a little later, I told Paul to stop the car...there was another lizard in the road. This lizard was much bigger than the other two...and he just sat in the road wagging it's tail slowly and looking around. Paul was able to get some good shot of it, then it started moving slowly out of the road. It was like he knew we wanted to take pictures; very cool. We stopped at one more place on this road....a bay overlook. We took a few pictures, then continued on.
At this point (about noon), Paul and I were getting caffine headaches. We hadn't had a soda or tea since Monday afternoon. We stopped at what looked like a convinence store, but it was no longer open. Since we were so close to the Latte Stone Quarry we decided to hit that before looking for another store. The Quarry was pretty interesting. I just wish there had been at least some signs telling about the place. We took pictures of the stones that had been worked on but were unfinished (or something). I guess we spent about 15 minutes there. After that, we finally found Lucky II Mart. We went in, but they only had generic coke....yuck! We bought some tea and were on our way. Our next stop....the Swimming Hole. Again it was a dirt road, but once we arrived at the Swimming Hole the view was beautiful. We spent alot of time here taking pictures. We didn't get in the water, but that's ok. We finally agreed to find somewhere for lunch. Rota doesn't have any fast food chains....I was surprised by this. We found a place called Pizzaria Bar & Grill. They had Coke on their menu....Yay!! Their menu also had a large variety of food. I chose a tuna melt & Coke. Paul had a chicken melt and Coke. When the server brought us our drinks it was the generic stuff we saw in the Lucky II Mart. For me, at this point, at least it was a soda. Our food was good & filling. Before we left, we found out the hours of the place and looked at their menu again.....this time we found out they served breakfast. We planned on going back for dinner, then again for breakfast (much cheaper than the hotel).
Our next stop was an old Japanese locomotive and a Sugar Mill. There wasn't muc to it, but we spent alot of time taking pictures. My headache was getting worse even though I finally had some caffine & food, so we headed back toward the hotel. There was an ancient Chamorro Cave Museum on the way back, but it was closed. We stopped at another little grocery mart looking for sunburn lotion. I found real coke. We bought 4 cans of coke, some sugar wafer cookies, and some lotion for sun burns. When we got back to our room, I took some Excedrin Migraine and laid down for a bit. Paul took a shower, then once my headache let up I took one. We then played more Skip-Bo. Our plan was to have dinner around 7.30 (we got back to our room about 3.30), but neither of us were hungry, so we played Skip-Bo from 5 to 9 (I only won one game out of the 5 we played). Then we hit the hay....or should I say Mat?
We have a long day tomorrow. We are taking a tour of the WWII sites here on Guam....it's supposed to last all day. Must get to bed...........
