Given that I had some long hours to spend up in the air or out at sea, I resolved to finally make myself get through Neil Gaiman's American Gods, and see what the hype was all about. I'd flipped through several of Neil Gaiman's books in the bookstore and always put them down again because they never managed to hook me. But I decided to give him a ( Read more... )

American Gods was my own introduction to Gaiman and while I loved it, I always had the feeling that it's not everyone's cup of tea. None of the characters, even/especially Shadow, elicit much sympathy. But I'm a big mythology nut and that's what drew me in.

Have you come across Neverwhere? It's another of my favourite Gaiman novels. And it has a more lively cast of characters, with highly interesting motivations driving them.

Alternatively there are his short story collections like Fragile Things, Smoke and Mirrors...

Thanks for the recommendation! I'll have a flip through Neverwhere at the bookshop when I can. :)

I read it years ago and wondered the same thing too. I don't understand the hype behind his novels. But for the record, I finished the book easily.

But he is quite the consumate storyteller, he is.

I recently got interested in Patrick Rothfuss... pretty epic characters, but his trilogy isn't done yet.

You should check out goodreads.. you can ask for recommendations from the general membership too. Here's my profile:

i'm a gaiman fan but i found american gods and anansi boys a little boring.

Patrick Rothfuss is good but so far he's fantasy. are you into that genre? if you are, I recommend Brandon Sanderson. his Mistborn trilogy is amazing.

otherwise there's David Mitchell's Thousand Autumns of Jacob DeZoet.
