What does a cat DO?

I was planning to talk for a little bit about epigenetics, but as I know several people with one or more cats I thought this might be of interest. A study on what cats are doing. No, its not sleeping, followed by napping, and then some snoozingThough it does make me wonder how bored some cats might get around the house. It also makes me think that ( Read more... )

I'd be quite interested to hear what you've got to say about epigenetics (a word so new FireFox doesn't know how to spell it!) Fascinating discovery, almost heretical (Lysenkoism anyone?), and not exactly in my usual line.

The weird thing is its not THAT new. A number of years. Its just another thing that shows that the basic understanding of genetics doesn't begin to touch the actual complexity. It was already pretty convoluted with various promoters and introns/exons and post-translation protein modification.

Well the time it takes to wind it's way to one's ears is of course related to how tight you are to the subject material. Physics/Cosmology etc etc is my bag, so bio-sciences take longer for me to hear about than... dig... say goodbye to the statistical nature of quantum mechanics if space-time has a fractal dimension! *grin* (yep, everything would be non-computable, not statistical)

My guess is that they are doing these things, such as exploring, and waiting and watching, as a substitution for the hunting they'd do in the wild. Hunting is all about searching for new opportunities (making a round around the house), as well as being patient and waiting for one to come by (substituted by looking out of the window).
