I've decided that I shall have to track down quipquipquip and force Suikoden III on her like a venereal disease. She will probably fall asleep before we get to the good parts.

But for the important part of this post!! I decided for one of my resolutions I am going to try to read more books, because I've fallen out of the habit. So help me, Flist-wan ( Read more... )

Hello yourself!

And no, I haven't read either of those things and they sound amazing. Eskimos were the one thing I never knew I was missing! How did I not see it before?!!

I love it when you find a new book that can weasel in there. Much like the Spanish Inquisition, it's never expected. Unlike the Spanish Inquisition it's generally welcomed.

Captain from Castile, though it doesn't predate Hemingway, it does have convoluted language AND assassin priests! It's historical fiction - 17th Century Spain/New Spain.

Also, in case you've never read it (unlikely), His Dark Materials has multiple Assassin Priests. And is a rather philosophical series of novels. :)

Finally, the book I recommend to everyone regardless, Snow Falling on Cedars. So much love for this novel. ♥

Ohhh, Captain From Castile is pretty much right up my exact alley. I am big into long pointy things and buckles that swash.

And yes, I've read HDM :) But I haven't read Snow Falling on Cedars, though I think I might own it, so that makes it easy.

Book Recs! I don't know all of what you've read, so let's see what I can dig up here...

For fiction, have you read Butcher's Codex Alera yet? Or Jordan's Wheel of Time? WoT is definitely a...taste thing, so I can't say if you'll like it or not, but the first book in the series is worth a look at the least! Since I do know you've read the Hamilton books, I'm trying to think of some that would have Vampires... Kim Harrison's novels are a little trite, but enjoyable, and there are vampires in those!

As for Nonfiction, if you you don't mind Political Philosophy, John Rawls's Theory of Justice is an interesting enough read, albeit very difficult to get through. Also Hannah Arendt!

Oh and I just thought of one more. Read The Historian if you haven't. It is fantastic.

I've read Hannah Arendt. Or some of it, anyway. I don't mind political philosophy, as long as it's good, and so I shall take your recommendation.

I have read some of WoT, it's...what it is. I have an immense hatred for nearly all the characters except some of the villains and Mat, though. I haven't read the other two, though, and trite books can be fun books. You're talking to the person who read a romance novel just because it had Reno from FFVII in it.

I've read the Historian, though, me and whisperwords are discussing it upthread, hahah.

I think you'll enjoy Rawls! It's...a bit out there, since it's a theory of justice and what creates a just society, and how to make a just society when the future citizens are ignorant of where they'll end up in the society when it's formed. It's interesting, and definitely worth the read, albeit, the book is freaking massive.

Yeeah, Some of the characters have grown on me, and some of them I could do without! It's one of those series that you either love or hate, I think! Although I admit that I like Nyaeneve

And how did I miss that one? /trundles up there

What worthwhile read isn't a bit out there? If we wanted to be stuck in here, we wouldn't be reading.

Heh, I'm kind of in the middle, but no way am I reading the rest of the books till the last one is published. I read, I feel, the first four, but I skipped large chunks because I hate Rand and Perrin. Especially Perrin, and I can't even remember why.

No Foucault? It's not really academic until you cite Foucault, Stacey.
