Zombie Future -- Matt on first time with a zombie

Nov 07, 2010 17:20

You always remember the first time. Isn't that what they always say? Well the first time a zombie rushes at you, mouth gaping in a inhuman scream, eyes blank and wide and yet somehow focused on you, you don't forget it.

Matt's first face to face was put off as long as possible. Barricaded in his room. Kept inside during attacks. Never venturing past the top of the wall, staring down at the ground below. But it's been two years since the start of it all. He misses proper trees and proper ground and...life outside these walls.

So he worms his way into a hunting party. Naruto, Al, Caesar, they don't know until he's left the wall and is well on his way. His mind shielded, hiding his location from Al, hiding the fact that he had left. Al didn't yet suspect it.

Helping hunt, bring down a few stray deers, oh and then a cow that's still alive, score, he can make hamburgers. Sleeping under the stars, under the care of their night watch. He missed the outdoors...

But the screaming wakes them at dawn, a guard taken out and a horde, just 12, is on their way, eyes on them, on their kills, on tasty flesh and then the lead zombie put on speed. It was a young girl, body covered in blood and filth, blonde hair tangled in a mess that streamed behind her. But her mouth opened in such an eery scream, head twisting sideways, eyes fixing on him.

The burst of speed caught them all by surprise and he could barely grab his gun and cock it before she was a few yards before him. He watched her limbs explode with each shot, squeezing the trigger in quick bursts, hoping she wouldn't make it within biting distance, that Al wouldn't lose someone else to the zombies, that he wouldn't die.

The pile of flesh, riddled with bullets, fell a foot from his body. His adrenaline wouldn't quit and when the haze fell from his mind, he heard Al screaming at him, the distance snapping half, the vague sound of Al's sonic boom far away. But despite the screams of zombies being killed, the snap of bones, crunch of skulls caving in, he couldn't keep his eyes from the corpse.

Once a person. Probably a pretty girl, maybe from somewhere around here, a happy teenager. But she's not a human anymore, not a person, nothing but a nightmare. A dead nightmare, but one nonetheless.

Al's arms swept him up, back away from the body, from the last zombie still fighting. Al's yelling rung in his ears and his head, forcing in the point of his stupidity, how dangerous it was, why would he risk his life.

Al looked startled when Matt turned in his arms, pressed his face to his chest and cried. It'd never been that real before. He'd never actually seen a zombie, never been allowed to, never been let out of Al's protective sight and the reach of his powers. But it's real now. There are things out there are trying to kill him, that won't care who he is, that see him as a piece of meat.

How had this never been so real before.
