Abel @ wiki: though this briefly describes his early history (which is where his canon point is being taken from), it doesn't go particularly in depth -- so I'm going to summarize a little more here!
As of 2080 A.D., Earth was facing a major crisis in the form of overpopulation; this spurned the development of what was called the "Red Mars Project," an effort to colonize and settle on Mars. In an effort to make the project most successful, four genetically modified human clones were created -- Lilith Sahl, the prototype, created in 2085 A.D. in India; Abel Nightroad in England and Cain Knightlord in Germany circa 2088 A.D.; and Seth Nightlord in Canada circa 2098 A.D. All were property of the UNASF -- United Nations Aerospace Federation. They were created to better withstand the harsh conditions on Mars, as well as age slower -- raised as intelligent tools that would herald mankind into the future as leaders of the colonization efforts.
The project was successful; 100,000 Earthlings and the four clones made landing on Mars' surface and built the colony as intended. Abel and his 'brethren' were treated as sub-par, lesser creatures -- nothing but tools; guinea pigs. Because of this, each coped in their own way -- but Abel wore his displeasure for the situation openly and often, violently. He was disliked by the population who he hated in turn for his off-putting and many times physically abusive behavior. He only seemed to 'calm' a bit after Lilith Sahl began speaking with him more often, her serenity seeming to act as a balm to his pain that found outlet in bitter rage.
The clones inherited various positions headlining the colony as was their birthright -- Cain became the Major, overseeing the entirety of the Red Mars Project; Abel was the Commander, charged with the security sectors; Lilith and Seth possessed the ranks of Lieutenant -- Lilith headlining the medical division and Seth investing in science and medicine.
Personality: On the surface... Abel is a bitter, dry, and often times violent personality. He wears his hatred for humanity (who he deems lesser than him and his family) on his sleeve, making no secret of his distaste despite the trouble this abrasive attitude often earns him. Detached and dispassionate, outwardly apathetic... he can come across as arrogant, and to an extent, this much is true. His pride gets him into trouble and he has absolutely no problem voicing his opinion against humankind for their treatment of he and his brethren, seeing the world as having 'wronged' and 'slighted' him in whole. To Abel, everything and everyone is the enemy, blamed for the actions of those around him... and below the surfaces of denial, so is he an enemy to himself.
What lies beneath the exterior of abrasion is much simpler. He is -- and always will be -- at heart, a wounded, frightened child crying out for acceptance and love. The reason he's so quick to ball his fists and fight is because he wishes for, more than anything, that he were simply accepted and cared for rather than treated as lesser than those who created him. He aches to see his family subjected to painful tortures and mistreatment at the hands of humanity, and thus he coped in the only way he knows how, transferring his pain into anger and rage for a release lest it bubble inside like a poison and destroy him from the inside out. He lashes out in violent outbursts when it becomes too much -- and while that vengeful rage might well be real, what's truly behind it is nothing but pain and longing to be 'normal' and like those who seem to take advantage of and bastardize the simplest gifts they're given: freedom. Their fates are not predetermined. They build their own futures... their course of life was not handed to them, but one they forge themselves. He sees murder and rape and war, and he desperately aches to fix these wrongs -- but it instead internalizes this as bitterness and a perceived jealousy, a judgment for those who have all that he desires and foolishly squander it. If he will be made separate from them -- then he'll look for all the reasons to be glad for that fact instead of try to become worthy of 'integration' into their people to justify his anger. He rather be different than alike if there's the slightest chance for rejection or betrayal.
Abel is extremely difficult to grow close to; he innately gravitates toward 'family,' seeing them as the only people worth his trust -- and even then, he has erected barriers that he, in all likelihood, isn't even aware truly exist. They were created to protect him -- to rationalize and explain why he and the other RMP clones were treated, abused, and continually used like tools for the sake of others as if they were property rather than people. For this reason, he will mostly treat those he meets as expendable and attempt to be rid of their company. Particularly persistent types who aren't immediately off-put by his attitude might be the kind to get under his skin. If so, he'll try to ignore them; if they continue, he's likely to try to distance them through other means -- either with an act of physical violence (not necessarily to their person -- but suddenly jamming a utensil into a table at mess, or breaking something nearby with force) to demonstrate he has a thin line of patience and it's going to be crossed. Despite his short fuse, he has adapted from his youth and learned some sense of maturity; it'll take more than a few idle words to really get under his skin enough to do something about it -- but make no mistake. Push at him enough, and he's sure to react.
His cold exterior hides the burning rage beneath that will eventually lead him down the path of genocide in his future; Abel is absolutely capable of severely injuring -- if not killing -- others, especially in acts of self-defense or to protect those precious few he truly loves. He is utterly bonded with his brother (who he is a clone of), Cain; they are rarely outside of each other's company if they can help it and seem to possess an unnaturally strong bond. For this reason, anyone who Abel perceives as a danger to his brother will be met with far less patience than if the same threat or injury was made to his own person.
That isn't to say that he doesn't have a capacity for kindness at all -- quite the contrary. Abel deeply wishes to form bonds with people. He is emotionally closed off, but that doesn't mean that with time and effort, someone couldn't pierce the walls he built around his heart to protect it and reach him. He would make an extremely loyal and protective friend (if a tad possessive for it, since he's had so few relationships with others in his life) -- and as demonstrated later in his life, he has a good sense of humor and genuine compassion for the pain of others, even if his streak of obliviousness sometimes blinds him from seeing things as clearly as he should. Abel truly is a child -- he wants to play with the other kids and be one of the group... he's just been shunned from the playground so many times he gave up trying and became a bully, instead.
Abilities: Genetically modified clones possess enhanced durability, stamina, and age 1.5 times slower than the average human. Abel is resistant to most diseases and illnesses; he heals from wounds faster, and his reflexes are quicker than his human counterparts. He is stronger and generally sturdier as well, but possesses no otherworldly abilities or powers.
