Hi, everybody!

May 30, 2016 08:16

Sorry I have been incommunicado!  I have a boyfriend as of late January (my first in twenty years), and I'm finding my new relationship rather, er, absorbing.  In particular, not only have a lot of my attention and emotional energy been given to him, but I've been emailing him a lot and have started keeping a journal, so issues I had been using ( Read more... )

Congratulations! Please, enjoy having your attention absorbed and don't worry about us :-)

And, er, thanks, in a weird way. I'm currently suffering through my first (and probably hopeless) crush in about 10 years, and it's reassuring to hear that long stretches of not dating don't mean I am BROKEN AND DOOMED FOREVER (I mean, I know logically that it doesn't, but emotionally...).

Yes, well, actually I had been quite sure that I was, sunny! I mean, twenty years?! I'd finally given up on even hopeless crushing. And nothing anyone could do from the outside could batter through my barriers.

This I knew.

(One of the things My New Boyfriend did to woo me, if you are interested, was to seek out my fanfics and meta and comment on them [privately] intelligently.)

I believe you've posted some meta...?

That may be one of the most romantic things I've ever heard, not kidding the tiniest bit. Sharing a love of analyzing fiction sounds amazing. (One of my few past boyfriends considered such pursuits boring and stupid. Now, of course one can't expect to share all the same interests... but some things are too much to work around. That should have been a big clue that it wasn't going to work, even disregarding other factors.)

If I ever also find romance through meta, you'll be the first to know! Seriously, that is wonderful.

My sweetie is not an HP fan. But he's very smart, and shares with me (and you!) a taste for LOOKING at questions analytically. So he could enjoy the questions I was raising in my meta and fiction, without feeling placed to contribute to our debates.

So, if there's a lesson, it's nt so much that you need to look for someone who shares the exact same interests (e.g. Harry Potter fandom) as that they should agree on what kinds of QUESTIONS are of real interest and importance....

Wow congratulations! I hope you're happy with your new boyfriend. 😊

As for recommendations, laventadorn (on ff dot net and also AO3) has finally finished the first part of her ultra-long SS+HP saga, "The Never-ending Road", and it's ~AWESOME~. Her SS/LE fic, "Come Once Again And Love Me" (only on FF) is also quite epic.

And thanks for recs! I'd read COAALM, but not NER--I'll have to look it up. One that jana_ch recced to me is (also on ff) "Darkness Visible" by plutoplex. Very good read, but warnings for a dark ending.

Thanks, Mary. How is your own writing going? And publishing?

I'm making progress! Went to a writer's conference last summer, where I paid for a visit with an editor from St. Martin's. And - she asked for a revise and resubmit! She's got my full manuscript (which I edited after seriously considering her comments) right now. Of course, there's no guarantee she'll like it, but she wasn't obliged to ask for the whole thing, either. So please keep your fingers crossed for me. If you'd like to see the current version of "Honor", just let me know.

In the meantime, I am plugging away at a sequel to the dragons, and having great fun with it.

Thanks! I do hope you'll be able to give us more of your stories. If not, we will understand.
