Namely that, if one knew one were to be taken and left on a desert island, one would not be sensible enough to choose more than three belongings. And if one were not given any warning, such as in the case of a shipwreck, surely there would be little choice. It would be a case of making shift with whatever one was carrying at the time. Well, perhaps it is some strange cruelty enforced upon prisoners *grins*. However, it would certainly be a kinder punishment than those inflicted by my lord Melkor in Angband!
I will assume for sporting sake that the island is too far away from the mainland for a being such as me to simply fly away, but there are beings here that can transport themselves anywhere, within the blink of an eye. Ah well... that is for them to answer. What would I do, if I were stranded on an island? Well, there is very little that I could do, under such circumstances, so I hope that there would be plenty of game to hunt, and a cave or shelter of some kind against the weather. I no longer have any possessions (thanks to that accursed BAGGINS!) except my Orb; and of course I would bring that, for it is my only link to the world, and all these other worlds besides that I am newly discovering. Had I been asked such a question when I was still Lord of Erebor, I would have wished to bring all my treasures; but I do not know how I would transport such a hoard! Still, relative ease of transport was not specified; or perhaps an entire hoard would not be counted as a single object. Yet why not, since the sensible response of 'rations' could similarly be counted as separate items of food?
So, there is my answer: what I would bring with me is all that I possess; namely, my Orb, or in latter days, my treasure. And I would hope that the island would provide all else for my needs, else I would starve. But I should like to see the enemy who thought he could capture me and force me onto a deserted island!
