This is a phrase that tends to go through my head a lot. Mostly whenever I encounter homeless people. It's an attempt to remind myself that I shouldn't be complacent, that all it would take is a managerial decision for me to be laid off, fired, or whatever clever euphemism my company is using to refer to it this time to not say those words and ( Read more... )

I have to keep reminding myself that, outside of the occasional superhero fantasy, it's not all up to me. And, since it looks to me like this has been coming since at least Regan, I do expect it to be a long run - probably the rest of my life. I know for me that I will accomplish more by doing a little at a time, but consistently.

The election has been heartbreaking. I've wanted to look away from the news a lot recently, but I feel like doing so is normalizing things. The SO and I did the women's march and then the next week a letter-writing campaign. But, yeah, at some point I am going to have to back off and focus on self. I always keep in mind what they say during the safety review on airplanes: "In the event of an emergency, oxygen masks will drop from the ceiling. Put your mask on first, and then help those around you."
