I was just surfing through friends' journals and I found this one and started reading it. Just a comment on your experience in Arizona. They might be Native American or Indian influenced. Indian culture is strange. They are taught not to make direct eye contact with teachers and such, so the frowning thing could also be cultural. They are probably nice people, they just have a different concept of etiquette.
