Poor Inara! I actually feel sorry for her here--she must feel pretty bad to let her jealousy overwhelm her common sense like that. It should be obvious to anyone who knows River that the only possible effect of telling her that something she wants is never going to work will be to make her try harder at it.
Yes, that was my intention---not that she's being mean, or petty---she honestly thinks Mal and River are deluding themselves. And that Mal is a "lecherous hump." And that River has fallen for her first sexual partner. They're not looking very far in the future, yet.
Although you and I have actual RLs offline, I was dying for you to read this chapter, especially in light of earlier comments. I didn't intend for Inara to come off as the the villianess, and I was trying to show that River does, indeed, care very much for everyone on Serenity, even Jayne, now...that Inara cares about Mal and River, and that she's not chiefly motivated by mere jealousy.
But I do intend to bring up Nandi, later. I believe that Nandi was very dear to Mal, too. But I think that he never could live with a Companion unless she was retired: he wouldn't be able to stand it. (Adam Baldwin says in numerous interviews that he played Jayne as having a crush on Inara, and I can see that Jayne he would be fine with her profession.)
