My first disability-based obliteration

Jun 13, 2012 07:29

So I had a disability milestone moment recently.

An acquaintance of mine posted on her Facebook the internet-famous quotation, "There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading ( Read more... )

Simply unbelievable. No, there is nowhere to go from there. I wonder how she justifies her own childhood. Obviously infants and children cannot provide everything they need to live. Best to simply walk away from that, there's no room for a rational discussion with her kind of bias.

I, for one, am very glad you're alive. You've made a precious contribution to my life. *hugz*

Since losing the nerves in my lower legs, and gaining the permanently broken right upper arm, I've run into a LOT of people like that. People who, faced with physically visible disability (unlike my invisible disabilities, which are much easier for strangers to ignore), have said straight out to me, "Medicaid and the like only means you get to live longer, which means you're taking money away from me for more years."

...

I'd say there's not much to say to that, given that arguing with them won't get you anywhere, but I've also found that people like that also have no sense of shame, guilt, or really self-awareness that extends outside themselves. It's basically a form of sociopathy -- and the sheer number of people like that boggle my mind. We're living among a huge population of people with what are termed sociopathic tendencies.

...

Again, not much to say to that. Other than to say how sorry I am you ran into it, yourself.

Next time, I say you hold them down and I stab them with my cane -- by accident, of course. ::snide::

Wow.

It doesn't need to be said, but just because I know how depression lies about this sort of thing : she's wrong. Not just wrong, stupid wrong.

But yeah, I also have a rule about Arguing On Facebook.

*exhale* Thanks. Good reminder.

I keep thinking lately about nonviolent activism, and I recently read somewhere that, you know, it only works if your opponent has a conscience. Umm. Yeah.
