meeting Melanie Rawn and Kate Elliott

Oct 24, 2006 10:04

Whew, I finally met Ms. Melanie Rawn. Something I've wanted to do for oh, 15 years now, since I first read her books as a fifteen year old. Though, at that point I'd no concept of meeting someone I admired so much. Ok, bear with me here, my brain isn't up to full speed yet, the caffine still dribbling in. I was much too elated to go to sleep at a ( Read more... )

It was great. I'm just sad that there was such a small turnout in my town for these wonderful authors. You'd REALLY like Dragon Prince raven_feathers *wink, nudge* really

that cover looks so familiar. this book doesn't have a weirdly nauseating rape scene in it, does it? i swear i've read it. but maybe i just sat next to someone else who was reading it and internalized the cover art. :D

uhm, actually, check that ticky box re: the rape scene. :( But the character deals with it in a later book-- she doesn't remember it at the time, or blocks it out somehow. But it comes back with a vengence later, and is delt with in a healthy way.

I forgot about that scene. There is much more stuff in these books that is about power and responsibilty and how to use power that is at the core. Power over women being one of the ways of using power.

Absolutely. Melanie is really one of those force of will sweep you up in her enthusiasm gladly kind of women that one likes to talk with and could for hours about art and music and books and politics. (though we didn't touch on that so much, except for a discussion of a book about FDR and his fireside chats and letters that everyone sent to him after each radio chat)

I bought an extra copy of Spellbinder to be signed. Ara, did you still want it mailed?

OMG FOR SERIOUS?! Do you even have to ask?!

I'll email you my Utah address (once I find it...) and let me know how much it was... I'll have my mom send you a check for it.

We have a big stack of books signed for stock, and the posters of each book cover as well.

And... um... *halo* when y'all are done with that, if no one else wants it...

Oh! And the Spellbinder ARC. I'm sending it to Chani so she can read it. Shall I ask her to send it back to you when she's done?

ok, e-mail me your UT address -- I'm assuming you'll be there for Christmas?

I'm sorry I didn't get it personalized! But! I know you'll be meeting Ms. Rawn (though she said to call her Melanie, as Ms. Rawn is a school teacher) someday in person. ;-)

Send on the ARC to Chani for sure. She can gift it away as she likes, I have my own hardcover now.

definitely a good meeting. You get a sense of her books more from meeting her somehow. You can see how her characters are so passionate about everything and life and music and art.

Yaaaaay, I'm so glad you had a wondermous time! I love it that Melanie Rawn referred people to her author's note, too; I think it's great that she felt able to do that. Standing up for boundaries and all that (plus you didn't have to worry that someone would be rude!).

Absolutely. And she was so much nicer and more personable than I thought she'd be. She gave me a big hug at the end for being so sweet. *glee*

hope you're better? N. went home ill as well at work.
