The word Gay.

Mar 16, 2006 17:15

I've noticed a lot more people using the word Gay to describe something in a derogatory way. Then in the next breath say " Oh I don't mean anything by that." Well then why the hell would you say it? It's not cool to me. If you're using the word to describe something in a negative light, than the word will have a negative conotation. Nobody ( Read more... )

What's the first one? I'm guilty of saying it. The other two I also don't use.

really? Do you feel like you have a right, because you are? I have friends who feel that way but I don't. I just feel like it's perpetuating it.

And I know my spelling sucks. I'm to lazy to do anything about it. Isn't that GAY!!!!????

heehee

I wouldn't say I have a right to do so, but I don't feel guilty of saying it, although I do use it very infrequently.

I used it in a post yesterday so I don't know if that's what spawned your post. I guess it's a double standard, because if I heard a hetero saying it, I'd likely be offended, but not if another gay person said it. So, I guess in some respects yeah, i think we have a right to. Doesn't mean it's right though.

You were not the only one to do so in the last couple of days so it was a combo of things. I've heard a lot of teens saying it on the street as well.

in the begining gay meant happy.
i say gay sometimes about things being negative/lame.
but to me the word gay has different meanings, like alot of other word has. to me gay means that a person is homosexual (eventhough i dont really believe in sexualities). and it also means that a thing is just lame. those things have nothing in common though, its just two different meanings to one word for me.

its the same thing with the word cp ( as in Cerebral palsy) is something used alot in swedish language about somebody or something being stupid or dumb (you can say that the word most used in english that is most similar is retarded) or so, but hey most people who has it arent stupid or dumb or so. i use it alot though to things and people that acts all shitty or so, but i say that the way that i use it is spelled sepe, hehe.

I get the two different meanings for one word. I guess that could be a tecnical way to say it doesn't mean anything. I use the word retarded sometimes when I find something frustratingly slow, but that is what the word means. My little brother is "retarded" and I wish the doctors would have used that word intstead of "developmentaly delayed". That term gave my stepmother false hope that one day her son would "catch up" with others because he was just "delayed". He never caught up. And she suffered emotionaly far longer than she needed to in accepting his limits.

It's still going to bug me when people say "that's gay" though.

It sucks. I basically told my 18 year old step daughter that if she was going to continue using it like that (and especially in front of my kids!) that she could just go home.

Good for you!!!! Saying something is the only way to get people to stop using it.

That's like people who pick on wogs (people with italian, greek backgrounds) and then look at me saying "Oh but you're different". HOW am I different?!?!?! My parents are still Italian! I therefore have Italian blood in me!

I've never heard that term. Weird. I think you're different...but in the best way possible!
