Ummm...yeah; software vulnerabilities are a very small portion of how most malware spreads these days. It's just that there hasn't been much interest in macintoshes up until this point because there haven't been enough to care.
Open source is as vulnerable as anything else, there are classes of worms that spread across filesharing systems, for example. All the systems are at risk, it's just a question of whether or not its in the attackers interest to spend time building software for a particular configuration. The most common attacks we see on ssh, for example, are password lists, and there are a good number of worms which propagate through software doing what software is supposed to do.
Hmmm. Unless they really changed the licensing scheme in iWork 09 it is probably more sane to download the trial version and then just get a copy of a license.
Not that I'm recommending that, of course.
And unless they really changed the licensing system in iWork 09, I can think of three other ways to use the thing for free, none of which would involve exposing one's self to any risk. Of course they require a certain amount of technical know-how. And they violate the DMCA, so I would never suggest them.
