So...today in class, the instructor was explaining that the 5.56 (.223) may be small-caliber, but it's very effective/damaging because it travels at such a terrifying velocity. At a harrowing 2550fps, that 50-grain bullet inflicts MUCH more damage than the slow, lumbering 150-grain 7.62 (.308) at 2800fps. Wait ( Read more... )

The Army conducted a study, prompted by four decades of complaints, as to the effectiveness of the 5.56 FMJ cartridge. The conclusion was basically that it has pathetic stopping power because it just goes right through, so you have to wait for the guy to bleed out before he goes down. The recommendation? Aim a little higher and shoot twice as many rounds. Seriously. I wish I could find the link.
