I'd hate to stray from the awesomeness which is my normal format, but this post is already gonna be long enough.
First off, <3 Amy. And I get to see her and Daniel and Amanda this summer at Cali, which is gonna make my internship all the more awesome.
Now, for the
Day 1: We head out around 10 AM, 5 hour drive to some park near Yosemite, hell if I remember the name. Long drive, corner store food, usual crap. We get there around 4 or so and hike for a couple hours to our first campsite.
We start an illegal fire (not allowed, but wtf who cares), make burritos for dinner, people have some wine to wash it down. Sleep in tents etc.
Day 2: I can't remember breakfast, pretty sure it sucked. After that we hiked for about 4 hours to Yosemite park. Along the way we meet the park ranger who, as it turns out, likes to get high all the time and go around meeting people on trails. He hangs out with us for a bit before he heads to another site.
As we are nearing the camp in Yosemite, it starts to pour down rain. By now my socks are already soaked from creek crossings, rivers, whatever the fuck else we've come across. I figure "wtf, I'm already wet" so I decide to not cover my backpack or anything else I've brought with me with plastic. We walk like this for an hour.
We get to the campsite, it stops raining long enough to set up a tent and people to head off to climb a mountain. Obviously everyone and their mom left their stuff out and uncovered, and it starts pouring rain and hailing as we are already about 20 minutes onto a mountain. A couple of others and I head back and spend the rest of the day in the tent.
Good news: I had a whole tent to myself that night. Bad news: my tent, my clothes, my sleeping bag are all soaked, and it gets down into the 40's or so that night. Combined with the fact I forgot my sleeping pills, this is about the worst night I've had in awhile.
Day 3: We wake up, it's cold outside but the sun's up. I get out of the tent after spending about 8 hours laying there in the cold freezing. We make a crapload of oatmeal in one pot and everyone eats out of it.
It gets warmer, we actually climb the mountain we planned on the day before. Awesome views, easy climb, really warm. This day made the trip worth it. After climbing the mountain, we hike back to the entrance of the park (~7 miles) and spend about 7 hours driving home. We stopped for burritos along the way, of course.
I can't really describe much of what happened better than the pictures can, so uh... yeah.
i hate water, it can die
this water can die in a fire too
i was trying to headbutt them out of the way but they weren't taking it
one of us smelled bad, guess who
"hmm, take my shoes off or just get the damn things wet again?"
"and if you look to my right, here's another lake i don't know the name of"
it's like nobody's ever seen a huge pot of oatmeal before
this is the only time you'll EVER see me in shorts
we're climbing the mountain, i'm the awesome looking one
nice view #1
nice view #2 (yea that's snow)
nice view #3 (i didn't take this picture, the guy who did has a crooked head)
waterfalls are nice when i don't have to walk across them
this one is more like a snowfall
how can i forget the amazing park ranger who flew in to help us
the date is actually there, someone decided to spray paint a whole bunch of trees red
And of course, I couldn't leave this glorious picture out. Yes, that is actually me. (screw anyone who wants this resized or cut):
All in all, the trip was worth it. Shortly after getting back I got to talk to Amy, which made the campout that much better. I think all of us could take a lesson from Yosemite Park...
...if only I could remember what it was.
