Well, the common thread is the director, Henry Selick. He did The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach, and I believe he was selected for those at least in part because he has a Burton-esque style himself (that is, Burton wasn't much involved with the actual production but wanted it to look like a Tim Burton movie).

Oh! I read that book- in fact, I think it's sitting on our bookshelf in the office if you're interested in a quick read. It's fun to read children's books :)
