I find it funny how quickly times and trends change. Now I don't mean fashion here (though that changes rapidly, too), I mean more like social issues. I've been listening to some old NPR podcasts, a recent one being from January of 2007, and it talked about getting rid of trans-saturated fat. i don't think you can have saturated trans fats... trans implies the presence of a double bond. no?

the reason for "supporting local farmers" has nothing really to do with local or not local, but more to create sustainable food. the united states right now puts out more food than it can eat, but this is at the expense of depleting nutrients from the soil. and the given reason why "regular" food is so much cheaper is that there are unpaid costs that come from ruining the area (cowponds anyone...) for further cultivation.

i don't have particularly strong feelings about the issue, but those are their reasons. and they do it at universities to educate people and hopefully change the people oneday live their lives and make people think about the amount of energy and waste produced from raising a single cow. that's just the point, i think, even if movements don't last long on your campus.

it's not a bad thing that supporting the environment has suddenly become cool.
