Remember that children's show, "Pinwheel"? There was a character called Ebineezer who would listen to his static radio (maybe it was a TV?). My parents thought I'd lost it because I would turn on the static and just sit there. "They're HE-RE!!!!!!!!"
mindless self indulgence repo! the genetic opera soundtrack tiger army crimson curse son of sam thulsa doom ayreon - specifically the human equation album - about a dude in a coma, all the album is in his head, his life, his mistakes, all this stuff, seeing his wife and friend kissing and wrecking his car, then finding out he perceived the situation incorrectly, and then his redemption and waking from the coma. kinda artsy synth rock sorta thing, but a cool concept album that I found myself listening to over and over for a long time. enslaved - cool viking metal, specifically blodhemn album and eld album
you should also ask Sponge he always has interesting things to listen to.
Lately I've really become interested in early to mid 90's trip hop. Also, some reggae. It seems there was great music in the 90's that missed out on completely. I've never heard of this stuff and I love it. Makes me wonder if I would have loved it then...hehe.
TRIP HOP: The Knife - Swedish duo that borders on Industrial. A lot of my recoomendations will do this. Massive Attack. Just about every song they do is great for firing up when you're about to have sex. Delerium. Most people only know the one track they did with S. McLauchlan. Very melodic stuff. Ruby. Became a staple of the goth crowd, even though it's not really that goth.
IF YOU LIKE THIS STUFF YOU MIGHT ALSO ENJOY: Senser. Trip-hop roots, with emphasis on the hop, but it's rock/metal. Also, they use no programming - all instruments are live. If you can find a copy of their first album, circa 1993, Stacked Up, more power to ya. It's phenomenal. SKOLD. Tim Skold later went on to do some tours and albums with Marilyn Manson. It's electro-rock-punk stuff in his earlier work, though. And yeah, pretty goth. Sister Machine Gun. Lovely stuff. A little industrial, a little trip-hop. Too aggressive for the latter, not aggressive enough for the former

Citizen Cope Akaline Trio (thanks to Sponge on that one) All that remains Balkan beatbox (you gotta check them out.. awsome world mix stuff) and.. revist Slayer Megadeth.. older stuff.. I think, now that your age-ed...you'll find some new meaning in those older stuff.
Thin Lizzy - Still in Love with You/Emerald/Don't Believe a Word and the rest Lunachicks - Any of their stuff Blackstar - Mos Def + Twalib Kwalei = Awesome Judas Priest - the stuff from Halford's first stint with the band
Don't forget the Dio, if you are feeling uber-rock

So: What genres you into? I'll answer this after I get home. One of my reasons for living is to show people bands they haven't likely heard before.
