As promised, here is a bit more information on the C-U One-to-One Mentoring Program:
What is the C-U One to One Mentoring Program?
The C-U One to One Mentoring Program is a school-based program which provides deserving students with an adult mentor who will be a role model and friend to that student. Mentors are asked to make a one year commitment to their mentee and it is hoped that pairs will remain together through high school graduation.
What do mentors do?
Mentors meet with their “mentee” for approximately one hour per week, during the school day, on the school grounds, during the regular school year. Mentors and mentees usually spend their time together talking and playing games. Mentors’ main purpose is not academic although they may choose to use some of their time on academic activities.
What kinds of students are selected to be mentees?
Typically, students in the C-U One to One Mentoring program exhibit low self-esteem and have demonstrated a need for a caring adult in their lives. They often have trouble with peer relationships and may be underachieving academically. They are probably not receiving individualized special services and are not regular discipline problems. Students are selected by a team that may include the school social worker, principal and classroom teacher.
Does mentoring work?
YES! A Big Brothers Big Sisters 1995 study states that young people with mentors are less likely to be begin using alcohol and illegal drugs, engage in violent behavior and skip school. Teachers report that students with mentors show improved attendance and a better attitude toward school. Students in the C-U One to One Mentoring program who have been with their mentor for at least three years, graduate from high school and are accepted into any form of ongoing education or technical training receive a scholarship from the C-U One to One Mentoring Foundation. Currently, recipients receive $350/semester for up to four semesters.
How can I become a mentor?
If you are a dependable adult who is willing to make a one year commitment to a young person in our community, you can apply to be a C-U One to One Mentor. You will need to complete an application form, consent to a criminal background check, attend a one and one half hour training session and an interview.
