Only a week or so ago, I realised that a new Star Trek movie is coming out. At first, I had planned on ignoring it, but the pull of my first fandom proved to be too strong. I read some reviews, watched two clips on YouTube - and decided that I do want to see this movie after all. :-)
What I liked about the clips I saw:
- The actors! Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Karl Urban actually felt like the young versions of their Kirk, Spock and McCoy.
- When watching TOS, my favorite characters were McCoy and Spock. I never felt really intrigued by Kirk. In the Star Trek trailer I watched I found Kirk interesting for the first time. Most likely because two scenes (boy Kirk speeding a car through the desert, young Kirk racing on a motorbike) are strongly reminiscent of Anakin Skywalker, another adrenaline junkie. :-)
I don't think the similarities between the scenes is a coincidence. I read an interview with Abrams and apparently he not only enjoys Star Trek, but also loves Star Wars.
Apart from that, people at work found out that I was a huge Star Trek fangirl in my youth - and now all the other Star Trek fans are revealing themselves. :-) Currently, work breaks are filled with Star Trek trivia, conversations on who likes which science fiction series and people borrowing DVDs from one another. :-) It also neat to have found one other person who likes Star Trek, Star Wars and Babylon 5.
