Consider me having been in a fetal position for the duration.

Oh, here, have some scans under the cut and let me explain.

DC has decided that one of their monthly business models going forward is Calculator torture porn. )

It's been a rough few months, yeah. Everytime they've used him for years now I've always been worried that he might get killed off, but it seems as though this time might be The Big One. (he survived the steel tentacle in BoP #126, and is now Calc v2.0 with Kilg%re nanobot additions)

Is it any easier writing fic when your main man's already dead?

I know how you feel, because my first favourite comics character was Pyro, who spent nearly 8 years of our time dying from a fatal disease (which typically killed victims quickly). He'd show up, sick as a dog, then disappear, and I'd always worry he'd die in each appearance or behind the scenes. Then they finally killed him off in 2000, and despite Marvel bringing back like every dead mutant on the planet since then, he still ain't back. In a way, it's a relief, but I still miss him.

I 'love' how poor Calc looks different in every appearance. Is it really that hard to standardize a character's look?

It can be, because the fic isn't likely to be made redundant the next month, but at the same time there aren't any new appearances/stories to give inspiration.

Gah, Pyro sounds like soap-y X-cess. 8 years is an awful long time to be worried - I'm maybe halfway there, since BoP #87 in 2005.

You'd think the look would be easy to standardize, but it's been open to interpretation almost since the beginning. Identity Crisis happened (and I loved Rags' original model for him) but then Villains United happened and Dale Eaglesham put his own spin on him (see the one page with Mark from VU: Infinite Crisis Special), so the interpretations have varied between the two extremes. Seems like the artists trip up on the hair the most, and then the glasses (they're supposed to be specs, not full-fledged glasses). What's ridiculous though, at least in the above samples is that the BoP art is from the same guy, Claude St. Aubin. But they're throwing rotating crap artists at BoP as it's winding up and just don't give a damn about the title.

*looks up at the verbal diarrhea* Now I have to go post a critique on all of Calc's looks..
