book shelves are always needed, they're impossible to find used. My dad made ours when we were kids because we couldn't find any! They were rough but at least they were strong enough to hold all the damn books we'd buy.
This is my year to get rid of stuff as well. Especially things I know I won't use. I don't want to be wasteful, but I have to admit defeat on things just so I can more neatly put away the things I want to keep!
The Baltimore craigslist is actually full of bookshelves, though I've no idea what percentage are in decent shape & smoke-free; this time around I was mostly looking for small-child-friendly cubby shelves for toy storage, which was harder.
I'm trying to make sure most of the stuff I get rid of goes at least to the thrift store, but yeah, the whole thing hard. (Had you heard that H&M has textile recycling at all their stores? The one I asked at said as long as it's fabric they accept it, so I'm keeping a bag of sewing scraps and dead clothing bits to take in.)
