On how and what we read
Voting for the Hugo awards just closed last night, and for the first time I bought in to the voting process.* Awards are not something I pay a lot of attention to, or rather that I only pay attention to now that they show up in my twitter feed. Correspondence and questions.
I have been fostering toddler correspondence-- so far the Megatherium and I have collectively written two rounds of thank-you notes to her paternal family, a card to my mother (which we then lost & just found again in time to mail it so she may not get it before going out of town, but whatever), two cards to her same-age proto-friend down the ( Read more... ) -

I had a ridiculously stressful dream last night in which grauwulf decided we were moving to some place in western Maryland with a house on a small lake that he was trying to convince me was better because it was twice as big, despite the neighbors having paved over their entire lakefront edge. I'm reading a book called Grass, Soil, Hope: A Journey through Carbon Country by a man called Courtney White (or possibly Joseph Courtney White, depending on whether you believe the cover or the interlibrary loan sticker; and admittedly part of the reason I'm reading it now is that I've run out of renewals and have to take it back to the library ( Read more... ) -

Not dead, though I have spent almost half the last two months moderately sick in one way or another. The Megatherium's words are finally growing in; she's still missing a couple key phonemes (hard C, j/g, solid R or L tho she'll use words with those in) and hasn't begun attempting grammar yet, but she'll echo all sorts of things, now in multiple syllables. So my old extremely stupid phone started mysteriously turning itself off some months ago, which in the context of a toddler and no home phone seemed like a problem. And while I wasn't really mentally ready for the smartphone age, I also didn't want to commit to another two years of stupid phone. Another year of me
The calendar tells me that I've been breathing on my own for thirty-six years, and I have retreated with the laptop, my tea, and a couple of mint-chocolate-chip cookies cadged out of the giant cookie sampler bag my mother got from her neighbors' christmas eve party. The Megatherium is finally taking an interest in speaking, though a bit haphazardly. At present she can (or will deign to) say about as many letters as words.
