I Guess I'll Go Ahead and Let the Cat Out of the Bag

Well, it's official, at least on paper: I finally signed a publishing contract to put out the book I've been chipping away at for the past year. If I haven't been posting here too much of late, well, you know why ( Read more... )

I'm very happy to be getting published, but the irony is that you'll probably make a lot more off your book than I will, Bravo. As a self-publisher you get to enjoy all of the proceeds from any sales, while I am only entitled to a cut.

it's not irony. It's called planning your future. Making your own way in the world.

If a publisher offered me $50,000 to print/sell/distribute my book at no cost or work to/from me -- that would be incredible for a first time, unpublished writer. But if $50,000 was all I was going to get for writing this ONE BOOK, I'd tell them to get the F out of town. If I sell 5000 copies myself at 10 bucks a pop, that's 50,000 doll hairs for me and mine. Is any publisher going to offer me 10 bucks per book sold? I think not. F them.

Life is all about the big picture. People often can't see the forest for the trees. That's not my original line.

I quote a lot of people in my book, people much smarter than me. People like Ford Fairlane

"Hey baby, I'll take you out tonight, shove a hamburger down your throat, show you a good time."

That Andrew Dice Clay sure was smooth.

Fair enough, Bravo, but a publisher gives you DISTRIBUTION and hookups in the media, which is essential. I respect the DYI ethic, but you'll have to bust your ass to move books. I for one, hate being a salesman more than anything in the world. I just can't do it. I'd rather have someone else pimp my shit, even if it means I make less money.

That's just me.

Congrats, Chris! Very cool, indeed. When you know more, please let us all know. I have another friend who's nephew just got back from Special K himself, having done what you've been doing. So many people do this! So glad you've got a writing project. Working is the best thing for a person, don't you think?

Cheers!
