CENSORED! (but here it is)

(The following is a piece that was recently killed by a publication that I am known to submit to from time to time. They deemed it too offensive, which it very well may be, so God bless 'em and good luck. I have since given them a more palitable piece for them to run, which they, in turn, have gratefully accepted. But I am still left with this ( Read more... )

I agree it is a bit ridiculous when these'Lifer' , or fresh out of school "TEACHERS" as they call themselves, bitch about Korea. No one forced them to be there- and why is it such a surprise that a country that isn't historically Western doesn't speak English that well? Research the motives behind global english before jumping to the conclusion that since this is a modern age, everyone needs to learn english. think about what you've done to be a better global citizen, rather than why others aren't as good as you. .. which you basically said- agreed

I'm still pretty new but it's true, it's true.

I didn't come to/stay in Korea because my life in Canada was sucky, but I agree with the sentiment nonetheless - I think in general the people who complain constantly are the people who are just here 'on a break from real life'. The people who see living abroad as a viable life choice are the ones who organize all the events, run all the clubs, and create the expat scene that we've all grown to know & love.

Pretty obvious the magazine is Haps, and I am the one that "deemed it offensive".

As always I love Tharp's writing, but in the Airline-like mag genre that me and my compatriot's work in and the area of the world we occupy, that's the the way it goes. Yippee/

Cue the violins for the nouveau Hunter S. Thompson's shunned by the man.

Haaa, fantastic piece. Glad to see that whiny-jag-expat problems remain international. This: "people whose lives haven’t sucked enough back at home yet" hadn't occurred to me yet, but I completely agree. I pretty much just avoid all expats, they make me nuts.

This actually sounds like a Korea Times op-ed piece. I bet you a tenner they would publish it with small modifications.

I think you're spot on with why so many people are chafed by Korea, but I don't like what the piece implies for the people who like Korea (unemployable losers) or for why Korea itself is likable (if your life has sucked enough...)

Well written, as always. Just my honest two cents. Write on.
