Author's Notes: I'm becoming ever more convinced that Joe/Nick is practically canon, but it's always fun to read about Nick emo-ing.

They think you don’t know. Somehow they honestly think that you haven’t yet picked up on it despite them always hugging for just a second too long, or the fact that their hands always seem to accidentally brush just before they walk onstage (which you would believe if it didn’t happen every night), or the way they cram together on back seats and couches even though there’s usually plenty of room. You suppose they assume you’re like Mom, who just frowns and looks away, or Dad, who won’t admit to even noticing in the first place.
It’s not like they don’t include you. They’ll wrestle with you and make sure you’ve checked your blood sugar and ruffle your hair and make fun of your curls and Joe will crack bad jokes while Kevin’s simply cheerful, but it never means as much as when they do those kinds of things with each other. It’s like you’re the shallow end of the swimming pool that people only ever frequent when they’re going in or coming out, because everyone knows the deep end’s more fun.
It’s lame to be the shallow end. Sometimes you really wish that Joe would immerse himself in you.
