He’s convinced he remembers the day she was born. Vaguely, of course, because he was terribly young, and he doesn’t recall images of that time so much as feelings. Suddenly he wasn’t the only child anymore - there was another little being, one who sapped Mommy and Daddy’s attention, and he hated that, absolutely hated it. She’s complicated his life from the very start and yet somehow, inexplicably, he’s fond of her.
--
He intensely disliked her during the first five years of his existence. She was a year younger and always trailing behind, wanting to get into whatever he was doing but hopelessly unable to keep up. He’d run to his room, slam the door before she could toddle in after him then sit and read his little kid encyclopedias, deaf to her plaintive cries. He feels so bad about that now. Even when their mother came to peel her off the well-worn patch of wood outside his room, she wouldn’t go without a fight - just in case he changed his mind. She was like his shadow. He only wanted a break.
The first day of school, he missed her terribly.
--
They shared their first kiss when she was eight and he was nine, too young to understand quite how bad it was, but old enough to know better. She was going through a wedding stage. Everything in the house was festooned with ribbons, teddy bears lined up stiffly in rows, dolls decked out in their finery. The only thing missing was the groom.
--
They kissed infrequently after that, just for the hell of it. Both went through rebellious stages (Justin grew out of his) and they understood just enough to know it wasn’t allowed but that it felt good. Then Alex met Dean and Justin met Miranda and they stopped doing or even talking about it, finally grasping just how wrong it really was.
--
They’re learning about the wizard world’s justice system when their father mentions the word for what they used to do, and they both jolt like they’ve received twin electric shocks.
Alex’s eyes meet Justin’s. He watches the movement of her throat as she swallows and somehow manages to send a shaky, reassuring smile her way. It’s the first time in a while that they’ve acknowledged this, to themselves or each other, and when Justin realizes this he frowns. She’s so precious to him, his little sister. Sometimes he wishes they’d never stopped.
