Andrew has a theory that people are the way they are no matter what their parents do. He'd still like muscley lean shoulders even if he didn't used to have My Little Ponies; he'd still like boobies even if he didn't have GI Joe. Because they're not related, toys and crushes; he doesn't see how they can be. There aren't chemicals in the Playskool cooking set that make you think of cock.

He played House in kindergarten. The girls needed someone to be the dad. He wasn't very good at building forts and being soldiers anyway. The other boys always seemed to win. They'd say he got shot, he'd say "Nuh uh, you were pointing that way" but they always seemed to have proof he couldn't see or argue against. He couldn't understand why they made the rules and he didn't, and when he tried to follow the rules, he was always in the wrong. So he prepared imaginary food and brushed doll hair.

And he can't understand why it's so important what color the baby's dressed in. He's heard his family talk; he knows it was scandalous when his well-meaning great aunt sent a dress for him to be photographed in a week after his birth. (She said they always used to do it that way; the point is to make the baby as adorable as possible, and anyway it didn't hurt Andrew's granddad at all.) The picture was taken all the same, out of respect, the dress was apparently put into storage and little blue jumpers were quickly stockpiled.

But it's all in the genes anyway. Andrew has a cousin who always took his roommate to family events. Five years with the same roommate and no dating. You can't say he just hasn't found the right girl after that long. And they never complained when there weren't enough rooms and they had to share.

Andrew sort of thinks people who don't like both genders are limiting themselves on purpose. Because how can they not? Girls are pretty. Boys are hot. Maybe you like one more than the other, and you think you shouldn't like both at once. Maybe you think boys are gross. Maybe a nun molested you. But all things being equal, anyone should be able to enjoy being touched by anyone remotely attractive. If you don't even consider liking someone who's perfect for you just because they're a boy, you could be alone forever. And that's not worth it.

Andrew's baby room was yellow. But your parents can't make you who you are. Andrew has a theory.
