Character Name: Sam Merlotte
Series: True Blood
Age: Late 20's/early 30s
From When?: Sam comes to the Barge at the end of season 2, after the Maryann snafu but before he goes to his adoptive parents to try to find his birth parents.

Inmate/Warden: Warden, as Sam is a responsible, stand up kinda guy.
Item: Smart phone

Abilities/Powers: Sam is a shapeshifter. Once he imprints on an animal, he can turn into it. He usually prefers to form of a dog. During a full moon, he experiences the urge to shift; thus, he can't really control it. As a shapeshifter, he can heal quickly.

Personality: Generally, Sam is easygoing and responsible. He is incredibly protective of the ones he cares about. As an example, he watches over Sookie as a collie/mutt. When he sees that Tara is getting in deep with Maryann, he tries to reason with her, to warn her off of Maryann because he knows there is danger there (even if he is not sure what it is). Ultimately, the encounter ends in a huge fight, but it is clear that he cares about the people close to him.

Initially, he is secretive about his past, as he is unwilling to reveal his ability. When provoked, Sam can be quick to anger, but he is generally quick to reason after that. He proves himself to be self sacrificing in revealing his ability for the good of the people of Bon Temps when they are under Maryann's influence (see history). During the situation, instead of bolting, he takes care of Arlene's two children, who have been hiding from their mother and the townspeople. He also does a bit of swallowing his pride when he asks Eric for help in seeking advice to stop Maryann.

Sam definitely harbors some deep resentment for his adoptive parents for abandoning him. Even though he has a natural charm, he wavers between it and staying aloof. Sam's loyalty can also translate into jealousy and possessiveness, especially where Sookie is concerned, as he never really lets go of her. He bristles every time Bill walks into Merlotte's, but he is ultimately able to put any differences behind him in order to work with Bill to kill Maryann.

History:
((This history is solely from hBO's True Blood. I'm not familiar with the books.))

As a child, Sam was abandoned by his adoptive parents when they saw him turn into a beagle puppy. Presumably, he lives on his own, stealing as he must. He is taken in by the maenad, Maryann, when he is a teenager, and he winds up in bed with her. After the affair, he steals some of her jewelry, along with $100,000, which he later uses to finance his bar in Bon Temps, Merlotte's.

While he has a huge crush on Sookie Stackhouse, one of his waitresses, it is largely unrequited and eventually realized and cut short. He accidentally reveals himself as a shapeshifter to her when he reverts to human form (from a dog's form) in his sleep. He is lying naked where the dog was when Sookie went to sleep, but she initially takes him for the murderer that is plaguing Bon Temps. Sam is also one of the few people who knows Sookie's secret and does not think of her any differently.

He has a brief relationship with Tara Thorton, but it's pretty clear that he really wants Sookie while she wants Jason Stackhouse. The two have a heated affair both in terms of sex and arguments. It ends when Maryann comes to town.

Sam is immediately wary of Maryann; it is clear that they know each other, but neither reveals why or how. After Tara, he becomes involved with Daphne, an incompetent waitress who is a shapeshifter as well. Sam feels some relief in being able to be completely himself with someone, and he is clearly affected by Daphne's murder.

Daphne, as it turns out, was to seduce Sam back to Maryann in order that Maryann might sacrifice him in an ancient ritual, but she is unsuccessful (and arguably develops true feelings for Sam. When she is killed by Eggs (through Maryann) and dumped at Merlotte's, Sam is implicated in her murder. He, however, escapes jail, only later to be cornered along with Andy Bellefleur by the townspeople (who are under the influence of Maryann and hungry for a sacrifice) in Merlotte's freezer.

Jason Stackhouse frees them, and he, Andy, and Sam convince the people of Bon Temps that the god has come and taken Sam, when it reality, Sam has used his shapeshifting ability to seemingly disappear. Maryann, however, is not so easily fooled.

Sam is captured, yet again, and bound to be sacrificed. When he is stabbed by Eggs, he telepathically tells Sookie to destroy the alter of flesh that Maryann and the people of Bon Temps have constructed. The distraction causes Maryann to chase Sookie, and while this is happening, Bill heals Sam with his blood. Sam shapeshifts into a bull and appears to Maryann, who believes he is her god (a variation of Bacchus, etc). She embraces him fully, even when he runs her through with one of his horns.

Maryann believes she is becoming one with her god--dying, essentially--when Sam shifts back and pulls her heart out of her chest before crushing it. This final act destroys Maryann, ensuring his and the townspeople's safety.

He comes to the Barge of his own volition after this, possibly because he needs to get away for a bit.
