When we first meet Joey, he's straight off a 25 year stint in the local psyche ward, after having spent the time presumably alternating between tormenting Lauren for getting them locked up and watching her drool while sedated. Joey isn't able to do much, as a spirit guide, and that fact is thrown in his face every time he tries to move more than 30 or so feet from his Host. He's Bound to them, whether he likes it or not (and for the record, he hates it). He has never really forgiven Lauren for getting herself committed, and took it out on her every chance he got while there. Needless to say, Joey has a short fuse and even shorter patience. Whenever he and his medium are set to freeing a spirit, they must first convince them they're dead before they can even try to move them on. That task, convincing them of their death and coming to terms with it, falls to Joey. He often exhibits his short patience with people in particular, easily getting frustrated when they refuse to see reality, and often losing his temper soon afterward. Luckily for him, the blunt approach seems to work best with ghosts who refuse to accept fate, and he and Rosa seem to be fairly successful in their endeavors. Sometimes, though, the subtle approach is required, and when that happens, Joey always turns the table over to Rosa. Honestly, subtly and Joey Mallone just don't go together.
To say, however, that he gets his kicks from annoying people is a misnomer. He does have a sense of humor that thrives on parlor tricks and wise-cracks, and while he does use this to relieve his boredom with his host from time to time, he also knows when to stop being so annoying and listen. He'd never tell Rosa to her face, but he actually likes the kid, and the last thing he wants is for her to get hurt. Usually, he plays it off as not wanting to get stuck back in that 'hell hole' ever again, but his underlying message is still rather clear: I don't want to see that happen to ya, kid.
His outward demeanor is always crass, hardened, and sharp. Never quick with a compliment that isn't laced with some underlying insult or jab, Joey can be a tough character to get along with. That's not to say he isn't willing to give credit where credit is due, but the genuine compliments are so few and far between, it's impossible to mistake them as anything but honest praise. Criticism, however, is something he has in droves. Never one to miss the opportunity to point out someone's misgivings or personality faults, Joey is always there to put his two cents in. Or two dollars. It depends on the situation.
Short tempers and insults aside, in conversation, Joey is very adaptable, often taking on the role of whomever or whatever the other party seems to need at the moment, and he does it with a fluid grace one wouldn't initially give him credit for. He can be consoling, flirtatious, entertaining, and humorous, if the situation calls for it, and he plays each roll nearly flawlessly.
