the only isolation ritual i can think of is that of childhood punishment (grounding, beeing sent to ones room) children suffer for their actions by being forced into seperation and solitude.

prison
solitary confinement designed to produce more docile prisoners. I would argue that our system of prison is a part of our culture. Sort of similar to maggie's grounding idea.

More loosely, you could argue that Americans in general have a tendancy to isolate themselves from world affairs...
