After talking to the detective and cops, we were encouraged to become trained in firearms. That is something both Steve and I already have an interest in anyways. It's an expensive hobby but at this point, we both feel it's a necessary hobby. If we had had a gun in a locked safe the other night, we had plenty of time before he got in to get the key ( Read more... )

As for that night, we are both very grateful that it all went down the way it did - from start to end.

The cop that came earlier when Will made the threat online and through text - he spoke with Will over the phone and heard him growl his death threats. He was the first cop back on the scene, had him at gunpoint and made sure to be the arresting officer - he's on all the paperwork. He said it's too bad Will didn't have a weapon in hand because he could have made this all a lot easier. The implications are obvious.

Steve said he would have shot him and felt no regret. Sadness that it had to happen, sadness for Ben but with the unabashed and unstoppable darkness Steve has witnessed from will over the last two years, he would gladly put an end to his life after breaking into our home like that.

Me? I don't think I could have done it. In the future, with training physically and mentally? I think I would do so also.

If anyone would say that you being gun owners is unnecessary doesn't have to live with the fear you do. so they can bite my butt.

Yeah...when you live with fear and you know you are hunted by someone in the world who wants to harm you/ take your life, your perspective on protecting yourself with lethal force really does change. Before this, I wanted to learn about guns and own one but it wasn't imperative. Now? It's a serious goal.

Is it difficult for the police to get to where you live quickly, then?

They took about 12 minutes to arrive on scene. That was more than enough time for people to die.

You're right - that is not quick enough.

Do it.
My former college roommate is an avid gun owner and if it was not for her, heaven knows how many times things might have gone differently. Believe me, a tall brunette is a lot more menacing when you see her brandishing a weapon and informing you that she is a skilled marksman, and that alone is sometimes as far as it will go. :)

For every unfortunate account about a gun owned for home protection, there is a heroic one. If you have firearms in the house, it should not be public knowledge, nor should anyone really know that you have them. They aren't BBQ tools, lol. (Sorry, bad time for a joke.) It's a matter of personal preference and choice, obviously. I respect differing opinions and that you don't chose to own guns or have anything to do with them. I really do wonder though if you had someone in your life who sought to violently harm you by any means possible if you wouldn't consider educating yourself on how to use a firearm and keeping one for you and your family personal safety.

Also, I think your comment was a bit disrespectful/ unnecessary...I know you think you're the one person in the world who will do everything perfectly and never put yourself or the people around you in danger. That's just..come on ( ... )

I agree with this, but I dont' think maksmaster was making you feel wrong. She or he just has a very passionate opinion and it's hard to put it civilly when your very passionate about something you don't like.

For instance I have a hard time being civil about Muslim countries and how they treat women and why the heck the democrats seem to want to stand up to them.

The above was an example not meant to open a can of worms for debate.

However, I have heard maskmasters arguements but I feel that those are not ones to use when you say people shouldn't have guns.

Though the one about being in the house with ben and hitting him has some merit. You may want to ask experienced gun people if yous should go shotgun instead. I believe they are considered safer around walls. But check with an experienced weapons person.
