Well, I thought I'd shock everyone by posting... Let's see... I'm kind of anxious right now because it seems there is still a lot left to do on the house. I'm so ready for it all to be done, even if we can't move right away. But, the siding is looking good, and the house does look a lot better than it did two years ago. Many thanks to all ( Read more... )

Well, as someone who also subbed for awhile in the 'berg and am currently working at Job Corps, I've come to one conclusion: apparently my kids are going to be running stuff in the future, because my 6 year old son knows more math and can spell better than some of the 20-year-old thugs in my caseload. I don't have an answer, but I have noticed the same phenomena.

BTW.. almost time for a new user pic. You've been holding up that underwear for about 2 years now :)

I have kids in middle school and high school telling me that they'll just "collect a check."

This made my mind boggle for a minute. If those kids are smart enough to know what "collecting a check" means they don't need to collect one when they turn 18. Wow, that really disgusts me. It's a horrible situation more and more school are falling into.

I would suggest writing a letter but that's always my suggestion. Maybe get a letter writing campaign going with people in the community. I'm sure it's not just Muhlenberg that is having this issue. It really makes me sick the state of the school system nowadays.

Who would I write to, and why would they care? I haven't even finished a Bachelor's degree. What credibility do I have? I like your idea of getting people in the community to sign something, but I almost need a definite plan, a solution of some sort that we could petition for.

wow. as someone who went to school in muhlenberg county, that makes me absolutely sick. granted, i got a good education, but it seems that the people after me aren't quite so lucky. it's pathetic. and they can't blame the drug problem or small size or anything like that. i work in mclean county, which also has a big drug problem, lots of kids in the migrant ed program and is a lot smaller than the berg. and you know what? mclean county kids are smart. i was impressed by just how smart when i started working here. the board of education, superintendent and teachers expect a lot of the students, and they reward the students when it happens, and it works. there is absolutely no reason why muhlenberg couldn't do just as well or better.

i guess this explains why half the new teachers in mclean county are from muhlenberg.

I know there have been some teachers who have left to go to McLean County and Daviess County. I think this may all be part of it. In addition, teaching appointments are very political. It is all about who you know and who you are related to, which sometimes makes it hard for really good teachers to secure a position in Muhlenberg. I think what you said about expectations is very important. If you have already decided a child is incapable, then they will be. I prefer to set the standard high and work extra with those who are struggling.
