I am looking for good books to read while I am in Paraguay, I am making a list of areas that I have not read too much from in the past and would like to expand my knowledge in. Even if that knowledge is in an attempt to repudiate the claims of others. So I would appreciate it if you could give me good suggestions in any areas that you may have ( Read more... )

Stephen King..he's not jus horror...a brilliant author.

I would suggest, for starters, and if you like it, go from there:

Misery
It(a bit freaky, but crazy good)
The Dead Zone
Dolores Claiborne
The Eyes of the Dragon
Firestarter
The Green Mile
Shawshank redemption
The Shining

We'll miss you.

I'll second Stephen King in general, though specifically:

The Stand (his very best work)
Insomnia (you'll never look at growing old or sleepless nights the same way)
Needful Things ('be careful what you wish for' novelized)
On Writing (the most interesting and best written book 'on writing' from this writer's pov)
Misery (I couldn't put it down...really good)

Sorry for interrupting.

Peace and bright blessings.
krista.

For British history, I recommend reading Inventing Ireland by Declan Kiberd. It's about literature and history of the fabulous Isle to the West of GB. The Táin (bo Culainge), which is an epic folk tale that tells a lot about Ireland's beliefs and what-not during the pre-Christian period ( ... )

Thanks,

I'm glad to have friends that are much more experts in areas that I am not. I've read a decent amount of Vonnegut, but haven't read Galapagos. Which reminds me of what an itneresting man he is. I picked him up at the airport when he spoke at Albion. He was hitting on Dr. Lewis through out the afternoon.

I haven't read your whole list yet, but for religion read The Mists of Avalon by marion Zimmer Bradley. Everyone in a place of power should read this book...I lived it every time I read it. It's around 800 pages, but my hubby read it in a week. It always takes me a month or two cause I don't want it to end.

I have to get my loaner copy back....I almost picked up a new copy of choclat the other day at a flea market...so i could loan it out! And actually, if you know anyone else who might like it go ahead and pass it on. I am trying to get rid of excess stuff; books are the hardest to let go of, but I managed to take at least 12 to aformentiond flea market cause mom and I are renting shelves there to sell stuff...I'll spend every dime I make in that place, too. UGH... I'll get MOA to ya SOON though!!!

I'd read Siddhartha (if you haven't already) and some books by Lloyd Alexander (he writes fiction, but it's good stuff).

Good suggestion. I know the general gist, but haven't read it all. And I appreciate it, I need the fiction too.
